Pft. Usually it's rich boys with their girlfriends buying them a new iPod for their 3 and a quarter week anniversary.

That's why you go for the clerks, not the clientele!;)

We have two Apple stores in the area, and both of them are in upscale areas. Every time I go into either of them I notice the same thing...rich boy buying girlfriend an ipod...must be a universal thing.

I enjoy going to Rockefeller Center to see the decorated tree and watch people skating, but the actual holidays themselves do not move me in that meaningful a way.

Is the ice rink there now? I'm leaving for NYC on Saturday morning. Oh yeah! I'd be nice to check that out.

Christmas Traditions = bad. Christmas weather = Good! :D

hmm well i spent thanksgiving in my bed due to my illness

but still i was glad to see my grandparents ^_^ and to be talking with a friend of mine

if christmas was a time of moderate gift giving but mostly a religious holiday honoring christ the messiah, that would be fine by me

instead, it's a time for retailers to get hungry for money, the root of all evil, and it's just annoying to see the huge consumption during the period from thanksgiving to christmas...and every year seems to get crazier than the year before

while there are a few stories on the news of parents getting in fights over stupid childrens' toys at the day after thanksgiving sale, i usually find people to be in a better mood in general during that month, so that's a plus among all this shopping, traffic, lines at stores

I don't like the retail side of the holidays but I like the lights and decorations and the music and most of all getting drunk with the family on xmas day.:p

ps Im about to hang the xmas lights.

Wow.. seems like you've been sick for a while!
I hope you get well soon!
Have some fruit and sleep!
(and then, some sleep and fruit!)

IT CURES EVERYTHING!
(ok, not everything, but a lot!)

If you want to focus on the retail greed, then go for it. If you want to focus on some baby-in-a-manger-fable, then go for it. If you want to make someone's holiday a little brighter by volunteering, then go for it. If you want to deny Bob Cratchet a lump of coal, then go for it.

This time of year is what you make of it. Nothing more, nothing less.

OTB
I wish I could do that too! I'm looking forward to next xmas when I can work over the holiday again, I love the New year more, I think xmas is about about companies making money.

I was just about to post pretty much the same thing. I, for one, am going to enjoy my holidays. I suggest everyone else do the same.

Am I the only one who enjoys the commercialism? I like walking through the mall on the 24th, buying xmas presents for others and myself. And then all the boxing week sales too!

Sure, I see my family, but guess what, I see them the rest of the year anyway. No day on a calendar is going to make me love them more or less.

And let's not forget the excitement of partying on New Years!

As far as I can see, the only downside to the xmas season is the incessant playing of slow tiring xmas music. Maybe it'd be ok if they spiced it up with a dance remix or something.

I have found people's feelings on the holidays have a direct correlation to how tight they are with friends and families.

Loners do not fare well during the holidays.

I get annoyed at how early retails seem to hype Christmas these days. As others have said, "One holiday at a time, dammit!"

With that said, I enjoy both Christmas & Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving is actually my favorite holiday. No (major) commercial hype, no gifting. You just get together with friends/family and (over)eat a large delicious meal. Then watch some football and/or take a nap. Not to mention it is the only holiday in USA that gives you TWO days off from work!

It should be open. Also recently re-opened there is the top of the rock - The observation deck on the top of one of the Rockefeller Center buildings. Haven't been there yet but saw it on TV recently. Views look nice, though it's probably cold up there!

It will be like a zoo between now and x-mas there. I get especially annoyed by the guys with camera trying to sell you pictures in front of the tree (too pushy). There is also a skating rink in Central Park which is nice.

Have fun - Despite all the craziness, NYC is a lot of fun this time of the year! (Come to think of it, the craziness is what makes NYC fun every day of the year!)

You asked, and you will receive my take on the holidays. First off let be begin by saying that I find Thanksgiving to be very boring. I don't see anyone on thanksgiving that I wouldn't see otherwise, and every year it is the same food, same place, roughly the same time. I just don't enjoy it. I don't celebrate christmas, as I am not a christian. Rather I celebrate the pagan holiday Yule. It is okay, and nice to get gifts, and pick out gifts for other people. My family generally doesn't spend as much as some, and it is sad to go back to school and meet up with people who got a grand worth of stuff. But I won't complain. The holidays have become to mean more about money, and this saddens me. But I get over it, and move on.
