I either read OSX is immune to viruses, or that OSX has no viruses designed for it yet. I think there would have been someone out that made a successful OSX virus by now.

who knows for sure there might be somebody with a grudge working on one.

you know guys just now i had that problem and when i clicked to cancel it bought me to a scanning page where it imulated windows xp and it was scanning.. Then found virusus.. lol

BUT the thing is i got another pop up then i clicked cancell and it downloaded a file with .exe on it.

So i deleted it from my downloads... BUT... what would of happend if i would of tried to open it. The reason why i am asking is, i know there is no viruses for the mac, and it will not affect my computer, BUT what will i get on my screen?

So i double clicked it and then bought me to a "you are about to run a program that is downloaded from the interent." At which point i cancellled and emptied my trash... I thought it would give me file not compatible.

Weird?...is it because i have boot camp that i got that message when i double clicked? It wasn't running book camp at that point though.

If you tried to open the .exe not a darn thing would happen. Mac OS X cannot open/handle .exe files. The fact you have BootCamp setup is moot, because you weren't in the Windows environment at the time. It will usually say "there is no program associated with this file type" and then ask you to choose a program or cancel. You cannot "choose" a program, because again, .exe cannot be run in OS X.

Don't click anything on those ads. Don't click OK. Don't click Cancel. Those aren't real buttons, anyway. Just close the window and be done with it. While you cannot infect your Mac with a piece of Windows malware, it does become a hassle when clicking anything on a popup ad makes more popup ads, uh, pop up.

You know what's weird?

The fact that, in 2009, people still use browsers that allow popups, advertisements, and the execution of Javascript from untrusted sources.

It's most perplexing, given that all three are trivial to prevent...

Ah that always amuses me. I'll be online in Safari when suddenly, o-oh! I have a virus! Oh n... wait a tick, I'm not running XP. And even if I was running XP through BootCamp, I have my own custom theme not the blue candy look.

Its like the ads you get on FaceBook that pretend to be a FaceBook pop-up but if you scroll up and down they move instead of floating.

Or the ads you get in Hotmail, MySpace, Google, yada yada yada, even here in MacRumors you get them, floating at the top and tail of each page; "YOUR MAC IS SLOW. YOU NEED NEW RAM OR IT WILL DIE!" is my personal favourite of these.

To the OP, no your Mac is fine, even if it tried to open anything we can't read .ins and .exe in OS X so it wouldn't be able to do a dicky.

you, and everyone here should be using firefox, and have a couple add ons i have that completely block all adds. and even if it doesn't cache it, you can go through a simple window, click a bit but then its gone. i absolutely love it, o ya adds on google, gone; adds on myspace, gone; adds, gone.

nope

You dont have a virus. If you were on windows, your AV would pop up as soon as that executable was downloaded, then probably delete it. but since you're on a mac, you can just throw it away in about 10 seconds.

Oh, and there are "viruses" For macs. They happen to be very rare however because who in their right mind writes a mac virus? I helped out a Adult Entertainment company who wanted to make a rootkit like tracker for macs, but they had thousands of people on macs using their sites. If you have any virus (windows or mac) you will almost definitely not know that you have it. Period.

what's even more weird that there are people who think that a simple java malware could destroy their entire macbook...

my friend who just got a new macbook was writing code in eclipse and it wasn't building correctly and he just deleted the app.

This is funny! My grandfather (who is not computer savy at all) saw one of these ads on his Gateway laptop and ended up messing up his computer lol...but don't worry...your Mac is fine.

I do use Firefox. Just not all that often because IMO it is slower than Safari and the current interface looks terrible with the Magnifique GUI shell I have applied to my machine. I don't really care at all about the pop-ups, I find them amusing more than anything.

want to believe....but i think mine is compromised

same thing happened to me...considering im in my honeymoon period with my iMac,(almost 3 months) I was really ticked/worried when it happened.

I would really like to believe all the reassurances from everybody here but im having doubts.

here's what happened. same pop-up appeared and for some reason (perhaps panic) i tried to get rid of it...and it automatically donwloaded itself twice...i saw it in my downloads and quickly deleted it and emptied my trash. i tried the disk utility im not sure what it did (fixed it or not).

i noticed something really disturbing. my yahoo mail acct changed my profile pic into semi naked college girl....i checked my profile and it was completely different...my add..even shoutouts...wanting some lewd chat or something. i changed my profile again (decency restored) and changed my password. im still waiting if it will happen again.

my mail application also showed some weird signs....i keep getting a double junk mail icons..

having these issues i decided to call tech support....after hearing my concerns...he instructed me to ARCHIVE AND INSTALL. wich i did. i still see the double junk button on my mail (deleted it again).

im still weary and confused. I dont want to be the first one to be infected by a Mac virus.

Hehe, I actually have fun with this...so many PC users saying "ZOMG keylogger/virus site" and I get to go a look around freely and laugh at all the funny bad grammar faux articles etc.

Unless you get the administrator password prompt from something you download from a sketchy place (ie. the iWork + Photoshop trojans from torrents) you're fine.

What kind of file was downloaded? If it was .exe, it's impossible it did anything to your OS X. If it was .js, it could have modified your browser, but it's unlikely.

I'd wager the yahoo mail is an independent event, or a PC you used somewhere else was infected with something.

it was a .exe...i did not open it. just deleted it twice.

and no i dont use other computer to access my yahoo mail.

any explanation regarding the behavior of the double junk icon appearing in mail app?

No idea about the icons but since it was .exe there is zero chance that file was responsible for your issues.

what's even more weird that there are people who think that a simple java malware could destroy their entire macbook...

... Huh?

For starters, yes, a piece of malware written in Java could very well cause major problems (at least it could if it were to exploit the recently-announced hole.)

That's not really the point though. No, the reason that I'd recommend using a browser that can allow for selective control of which scripts execute is that JS is very often an integral part of most exploits. Yes, the hole itself might not be in the browser's JS interpreter, but most of the exploits for the major browsers in recent years have required the execution of some JS in order to work.

It's all about attack surface really. Same for plugins: why allow some random site to execute Flash content using a notoriously buggy, insecure plugin? Doing so exposes you to more potential threats, and increases your attack surface considerably. Yes, sometimes there might be a good reason to allow plugins to do their work, but why should you let every single site you visit execute code on your machine if you don't have to?

The truth. Now if only enterprise could use Macs so hackers can hack them for big $ and shut my fellow mac owners up about their lack of viruses :p

Really though, I'm sure no wants to make Mac viruses because they don't care about eprops as much as they do about the pay out.
