I was just watching a video on VLC and had one tab open on Chrome and the CPU was at 55C ... I realize 55 is not thay bad but it seems high considering im using like 10% of my resources.

Now that seems more "normal" than what you described before. Mine is at 53º C right now and I have about 15 tabs open plus a text chat, plus e-mail. But no flash. Mine never gets that much lower actually - say high 40's for really minimal use.

I haven't seen the 80C since though. Should I just take it back now or wait and see if this happens again? I don't currently have Applecare because I wanted to wait the 3 months to decide if I really needed it, but if I pass the 2 week mark and this still happens, will they help me out at the store?

Oops I completely spaced! I also charged my iPhone for about 20 minutes during the time the temp. hit the 80s... Could this have affected the CPU temp?

you laptop comes with a 1 year warranty and 90 days phone support applecare simply extends the warranty to 3 years and the phone support as well.

Nope it's not a CTO... It's the stock i7 13" model. Should I take it back at this point? I haven't seen any abnormal temperatures since.

Do you have time machine backing up in the background or any large downloads/ uploads going?

I noticed mine would run 20c hotter if time machine was backing things up (3 MB/s upload) Also I noticed it ran warmer when I was downloading World of Warcraft as the download was going at about 1.5 MB/s.

When the wireless is relatively idle and I am surfing the net I am usually in the 45-55c range.

I also noticed that if it is hot for awhile it takes some time to drop back down into the 50's. Once temps hit around 70 or so the fans tend to drop to 2k rpm which slows down how fast the laptop is cooled.

Normally I wouldve returned it immediately, but I figured the 85 could have been a one time thing. Should I just take it back at this point with these temps?
the video decoding is pushing up the processor's heat to 55C, which is completely normal. i see that all the time when watching Flash/H264 videos on websites.

if it keeps doing that i might consider returning since its not custom because if it will really bother you just get it over with.

Right now, I'm plugged into an external monitor (using both screens), wired into a speaker system + playing semi-loud music through iTunes, have mail & safari open (2 tabs: MR & FB), and am running 84C +4700rpm fans. Lots of peripherals but only browsing the internet & listening to music atm - at 24% CPU usage. I'll be interested to see what happens when I actually push it 'cause I'm not liking this too much.

when i am doing sth cpu intensive like call of duty 4, or extracting rar mine gets up to 85 celcius which is the max i've seen it getting

when browsing etc i usually get around 45-60.

it's definitely running on the warmer side, but not too extreme i guess. i think this is the case with most mbp's.

That's what's actually worrying me... that it's going that high when I'm seemingly not doing too much.

Damn, is this normal?

I might call them about it tomorrow. I can't go without a computer for the next week but I definitely don't like a now 86C CPU at 18% usage. And it's elevated on a stand and everything. Although I am currently analyzing audio volumes in iTunes and making a Time Machine backup so I guess it's slightly more understandable.

If I do take it back, since I'm within my 14 day period, will they give me an exchange or ask me to try and get it checked/repaired with the exchange only being a last resort?

It doesn't have to be within 14 days. You just have to be covered. It's a problem that would be covered by warranty--even without AppleCare, you have a year. They'll run their own tests, and if they determine that there is a problem (especially if you report failure due to heat), they will replace the machine. It's a pretty painless process compared with what you'd deal with with a lot of other manufacturers!

13"

13" has a small room for i7, which generates a lot of heat.

Powerful CPU + a lot of bad thermal grease + small room = overheat :apple:

+1 thats why even if apple puts out a bad comp you get taken care of with great customer service thats one of the main reasons ive always loved :apple: they are not perfect but they will correct their mistakes.
