No, you don't have a virus, since no OS X viruses exist in the wild. The sounds may be coming from another app. If your email account is involved, it's more likely your email account has been hacked. Change your email passwords to long and complex passwords.

Macs are not immune to malware, but no true viruses exist in the wild that can run on Mac OS X, and there never have been any since it was released over 12 years ago. The only malware in the wild that can affect Mac OS X is a handful of trojans, which can be easily avoided by practicing safe computing (see below). 3rd party antivirus apps are not necessary to keep a Mac malware-free, as long as a user practices safe computing, as described in the following link.
Read the What security steps should I take? section of the Mac Virus/Malware FAQ for tips on practicing safe computing.

Hi Lukester - as already stated, this is not malware, so not to worry! :)

However, likely an OS X bug that needs to be fixed - I've experienced this whoosh sound several times on my 3-month old r-MBP - also, CHECK HERE - many others have had the same experience - I usually just close Mail and the sound stops - Dave

I've had something similar happen when I had a bunch of emails that were queued to send when my internet was down or the mail server was down. When it came back up they all sent. Could this be what happened to you?

I do not know if this is even close to what you heard, but one thing that bothered me for a long time was the noise that Messages makes when a contact logs in if you have a Jabber account configured.

Was always hearing mysterious noises until I figured this out and turned off the sounds for Messages.
