Before activating my new 4s?

My new phone is coming today. I've updated OS X on my laptop, and all the other devices (iPad and my hubby's iPhone4) to iOS5. I didn't bother to update my 3Gs to iOS5 since it was only for 2 days.

It looks like, from something I saw on the apple site, that maybe I'm supposed to update my 3Gs to iOS5 before using it's backup to restore everything to my new phone. Really? I'm just bummed because it takes about 2 hours to upgrade and I was excited to play with my new phone.

TIA

Just plug in and backup up with iTunes. Use that backup for your new phone.

Perhaps what you saw was regarding backups to iCloud. Which you can do on your new phone after it gets the backup from iTunes.

if your going to update it make sure you save everything first. because the update will wipe out everything on your phone. I have not tried to update a 3gs yet to ios5 and am not completely sure if you must do it to transfer your info. but i do know that in most situations you cannot restore from an older backup. but you can do it manually by saving your contacts, apps, music. but you wont be able to get your text messages unless someone knows a better way.
