I made a mistake of installing OSX Mavericks on my macbook and it has all kinds of problems. I want go back to Mountain lion. I plan to restore from my time machine backup. But do I have to wipe my current harddisk before restoring? If so, is there a workaround? I want to make sure that time machine backup actually works before I wipe my existing setup, all my files are in this computer.

You do not need to erase your current drive to restore.

Just attach your TM disk and command-r boot. From the resulting recovery screen select restore. Then pick the date from the list you want to restore from.
