I got an iPad Pro 2024 this year and I don’t want to travel with it as it’s £1 grand to replace. I got basic iPad 2022 for £300. I prefer Face ID and the pro is slimmer but I use it for safari and watching movies. I know the pro may get more updates is it best to keep both? I know one is likely to sit in the drawer quite often. I have same dilemma with iPhone as I like to keep a spare as my last phone was stolen. But I don’t really trust iCloud I like that extra back up.

Tough question. I would travel with the iPad Pro if it had all of the insurance in case of the worse.
Yes I looked at insurance £70 per trip so within 3 trips I could buy a standard one. For some reason foreign travel insurance on gadgets costs alot maybe due to pick pockets? I know you can get cheaper insurance on a mobile in UK my fear is they don’t pay out heard people being offered less money than value of item.
As someone who has way more than 2 iPads I wouldn't say 2 is too much... 😅
I do like the Air large model but not sure if bigger is better for travelling. Problem is I can only use one iPad at a time. My wife has the iPad mini which seems small.
I like using my cheaper/older iPad for beta testing. Well, either that or for running older iOS with legacy apps. I also find it useful for alternating when one is charging.
I do travel with my pricey iPad though because that’s the one with 1TB storage.
I wouldn't hesitate to deploy multiple iPads in any Apple ecosystem. I currently have six that are used for various tasks.
Cool how do you use them? There’s a mini a 11” and 12 or 13 inch I think? I think all three serve a purpose. I also think the older 9.7 inch is slim. The old iPad 1/2 can’t see much use for them now unless it’s nostalgia.
Yeah I have the regular iPad, iPad Mini, iPads Pros. I use previous gen 10.9" and 12.9" iPad Pros to beta test new iPadOS versions.
Regular iPad is the living room iPad for vegging out in front of the TV
iPad Mini my bedtime iPad because its small and light.
2024 iPads Pros are my work machines. They are basically mirrored setups and what I use or take with me depends on the particular anticipated workflows (whether I'll benefit from the bigger display or not).
I take the OP is out of the AC+ purchase window? I only have my M2 11” Pro and travel with that, but I also have AC+ so if it gets damaged, I know I’m covered. I tried the two iPad approach (had a Mini 6), but eventually sold it since it just sat in a drawer not getting used.
£70 per trip seems a little much - I pay <€350 a year for 9,5k worth of photographic equipment including my ipad, also covering accidential damage. Do you have a credit card? Often there's a travel insurance already included.
Maybe I'ce been lucky, but I've travelled with iPads since 2010 and never had one stolen (abroad at least) - so I'dpersonally just take the pro with me.
Always good to have a spare iPhone, tough, to have a replacement while the other one gets repaired. Never had anproblem with iCloud backups too, but you could just do a manual one on your computer, if you have one.

Just a quick comment on your trust of iCloud backup. I have worked with hundreds of iCloud users over the last several years and, in all that time, saw just one case where a user lost data… which she’d actively deleted herself not realizing that the backup wasn’t backed up.
In other words, as long as you don’t manually delete your data, iCloud is very trustworthy. Of course, for far less than the cost of an iPad Pro, you could also run a Mac mini as a server that constantly downloads and syncs your data from iCloud as well, and then use Time Machine on top of that, ensuring that you never, ever lose any data.
Just some food for thought.

If it’s the case, it’s a waste of money and a problem for your mental healthiness since you don’t stay comfortable while you travel with it.
If it’s your tool for some serious work, I’d keep the cheaper model just for traveling.

Is it there something like Time Machine but for iPadOS? I mean, a local backup on an external drive. Not on the Mac.
One could be used for tests like if you are a dev maybe you don't want to install iPadOS bêta and enable the dev mode to test your apps...

I'd be the wrong person to ask this question of for a myriad of reasons. But, I'd say to keep it. The iPad Pro costs way more and the basic iPad will be something you won't mind risking carrying around in places and situations where the risk factor is increased. I also find myself running the iPadOS developer betas from time to time, so a secondary iPad is often something I have.
iCloud is fine. I think understanding how it works will put your mind at ease!
I don't know how frequently you travel and how careless or clumsy you consider yourself, but I would estimate the likelihood of something happening to the iPad Pro while traveling with it to be (much) less than the 30% you've been paying extra for the basic iPad. So, not a good bargain, IMO.

You got two iPad okay so just give your old basic one to a family member or just shut it down and put it away or sell it lol 😂
I would say maybe 3-5 times per year often large cities. Never had issues until my phone was stolen but some areas I don’t fancy carrying iPad Pro around ect train stations ect.
Thanks I managed to get iCloud to work from camera roll but I noticed Mac or pc photos won’t add and you need both side by side. So would sort of make sense to have a spare phone atleast to save going on my pc.
