Do I need a camera lens protector?

I’m thinking about going case less with my iPhone air but am worried about the camera hitting the table every time I put it down.

Do I need a lens protector?

Also— have had them before but they just make the photos seem a bit off for some reason.

yes, I'm 100% caseless.

I would. The silly bump on these phones exposes it to real world damage. I have a iP14PMax and with a camera lens protector. Guess what that protector has a cracked lens. So I get a replacement immediately. The design of these phones with the ridiculous camera bump is downright stupid. You put it down and the lens hits whatever you put it down on.

I haven't had any issues yet, but I've considered getting one, but I was concerned about it affecting photos like you mentioned. I suppose I could just get it and test it out. I don't think they're too expensive.

Many protectors are significantly less durable than the factory glass though, so just because it cracked doesn't necessarily mean the factory glass would have. This is true of screen protectors. They might even be purposely designed to crack more easily so as to absorb/distribute/release the energy of the impact and prevent it from reaching the factory glass.
