I'm not really sure what it does. I don't ever knowingly use it. I keep getting popup notices to update it, and the updater tries to trick me into installing something else in addition to the update.

Is Divx important? Do most people use it? Is there a preferred alternative?

DivX is a video codec. You need the appropriate software to play videos that are encoded with that format. If you do not have any, then you probably do not need it. Open-source players such as VLC and mpv can handle this format as well, though not as efficiently.

I'd say no. DivX used to be a big deal 10 years ago when heavy compression of videos was required for mostly pirated DVD-movies.

There are much better codecs around now and DivX is mostly forgotten.

The only thing that uses DivX codec is old porn. That's why nobody uses it, and even less people have even heard of it.

It was also popular for music videos, before YouTube came along.

I believe that VLC will play DivX natively, without needing the standalone component installed.
