I have a jailbroken and unlocked 3G running 3.0. Is there any reason I would need to update to 3.1.2 if I am happy with things as they are?

Edited to add- Do I need to upgrade for future jailbreak/unlock purposes? (Not concerned about features right now)

See my next comment (6 posts down) for more details

In terms of features I don't think there's a difference.

iPhone OS 3.1.2 contains the following new or improved features over 3.0:

* Genius Recommendations for Apps
* Genius Mixes
* Download Ringtones Wirelessly
* Organize Apps in iTunes
* Improved syncing for music, movies, TV shows, podcasts, and photos1
* iTunes U content organization
* Redeem iTunes Gift Cards, codes, and certificates in the App Store
* Display available iTunes account credits in the App Store and iTunes Store
* Save video from Mail and MMS into Camera Roll
* Option to "Save as new clip" when trimming a video on iPhone 3GS
* Better iPhone 3G Wi-Fi performance when Bluetooth is turned on
* Remotely lock iPhone with a passcode via MobileMe
* Use Voice Control on iPhone 3GS with Bluetooth headsets
* Paste phone numbers into the keypad
* Option to use Home button to turn on accessibility features on iPhone 3GS
* Warn when visiting fraudulent websites in Safari (anti-phishing)
* Improved Exchange calendar syncing and invitation handling
* Fixes issue that cause some app icons to display incorrectly

+1, except that some of those are for the 3GS which the OP doesn't have. Besides that, I do recommend 3.1.2.

I should have been more specific. I meant I didn't know if I needed to update to make sure I am up to date for future jailbreak/unlock purposes.

I was on another forum, and the subject was over my head, but gave me concern. I don't have the time right now to learn about everything they were talking about. But basically they were saying that they thought 3.1.3 would be released very soon. They said there is a possible baseband change coming with it, so they warned that you should have your 'SHSH' on file with Cydia. Don't know what that means. So someone said they were on 3.0, so just don't update. Then another person said,

"u COULD not update, but what happens when apple shuts 3.1.2 restore off like they did with fw 3.0 and 3.0.1 and u can only restore to 3.1.3? Yep, if u didn't backup ur shsh, then no unlock for u if they release a new baseband."

I am not sure what this all means, but wonder if I should stay more up to date than 3.0.

I didn't want to ask anything on that forum because they scream at you if you haven't read everything that was ever written anywhere on any forum.

I wish I had time to research every single thing, but I don't. If someone could just let me know if it is important to upgrade I would appreciate it. Thanks!

If you are jailbroken and accepted the "Make My Life Easier" option in Cydia to have it save your ECID SHSHs, you don't need to do anything. Saurik's server automatically requests SHSHs for each new version of the OS as it becomes available. It can do this without you being on that version of the OS at all. You can check to see what hashes you have on file with Saurik by opening Cydia and checking the home page. It should say something like "This device has SHSHs on file for iPhone OS: 3.0, 3.1, 3.1.2".

If it doesn't say something like that, then you chose not to make your life easier. You should contact Saurik by email and ask him how to correct that choice; I've never heard how one can do that.
