Do I need to take in my old iPhone?

Am I going to have to take in my old iPhone with me for proof to upgrade to the newer 3G phone? Reason asking is because im about to sell my unlocked phone to a friend of mine and am going to use a crappy phone until this Friday.

I already sold mine, so I hope the answer is No

I did write down the serial and IMEI number just in case
