I work on motorcycles and have calluses on my fingers. I have a screen protector in mine as it is possible to scratch the coating over time. If your hands are baby soft you probably don't have to worry.

I think anyone who works in manufacturing or repair may do themselves a favor following your advice. One would be amazed at how grit, polishing compound, used oils can sit on your skin without notice, yet turn your hands into emery cloth.

Well my hands are as clean as I can make them, but it would be like always using a soft fingernail, like out of the bath soft. The point is that while you might not use a protector, There are valid usage cases for one. To sum up, I prefer a perfect screen so I will deal with a little bit of image degradation.

Keeping it immaculate for someone else? LOL.

You don't need a screen protector, but I like to have one on to keep the screen in perfect condition for when I resell it.

So, you are saving the screen for the next user while subjecting yourself to inferior experience on your device. Not a smart thing to do IMHO.

Inferior experience? That's a pretty dramatic interpretation. I've used my iPad with and without a screen protector and i barely notice a difference. Every acts like it's this crazy drastic difference, but it's really not

Two years without a screen protector and no scratches. I do, however, close my cover every time I set it down and I am careful not to let my fingernails touch my screen. Plus, to keep the screen clean, I always wash my hands before using my iPad and I don't use lotion on my hands. So, I seldom need to clean my screen.

I figure by the time it gets so scratched I can't stand it - it will be time to replace the iPad anyway. Electronics are disposable. No sense in babying them.

I don't see why anyone wouldn't use one. If you can pay hundreds of dollars for nice technology, surely you can afford to protect it and keep it nice.

I was in the local dollar store with my wife, and they had screen protectors for full size iPads, Mini, and iPhones. I bought one for my second Mini, and the iPhone protector for my iPod 5G. These things are crystal clear, and the cutouts are perfect! The iPhone's cutout camera cutout isn't perfect for the iPod, but the front facing camera works fine through the plastic. These things went on perfectly, and without a single bubble. I bought a cheaply protector for a few dollars before, but it barely had enough adhesive to remain in place. These have just the right amount of adhesive, and I'm hoping it doesn't eat through the screen..... $1 is just too good to be true. :D

I have a screen protector on my iPad 3 right now and I hate it. I would so much rather just not have it. I treat the iPad exceptionally well. Do I really need it? I have a smart protector. I also have a carbon fiber backing. I like those just not the protector.

No you don't need one in general. I use one on my work iPad cause there's a higher chance it could get dropped and hopefully that little sheet will keep glass from getting out and cutting anyone if we need to try back up the unit etc.

I don't think screen protectors are necessary if you aren't moving the iPad around much. For me though, I'm traveling, throwing it in a backpack, and taking it to med school classes / anatomy labs every day. I believe a screen protector is worth it in these scenarios.

I have this one and it's very good. It's much thinner than a wet-apply screen protector, doesn't have the orange peel effect, and is clear. I had a wet-apply one before and it made things difficult with a stylus. This on the other hand works very well.

Application isn't as easy as a wet-apply. Just make sure to put a lot of effort into the application to avoid dust and misalignment. Unless I look at the Facetime Camera cut-out, I cannot tell my iPad has a screen protector (and I'm picky).

Preference. "I don't see why" != "does not exist".

It really depends more on the environment than movement. If there's a chance that it will be exposed to any sort of grit that can scratch the screen then one runs the risk of scratching the screen. It also depends on preference. Some are very picky about even micro scratches. Some can't be bothered.

i have one. a quality screen protector (power support crystal) is completely undetectable, doesnt degrade the experience one bit, amd keeps the oleophobic coating from wearing off. ipads get real nasty when that wears off.

i think most people are just too intimidated to try putting a screen protector of that size on.

nobody says they need a protector on their ipad, but everyones got one on their phone...
