Do I really need to wake up at 3am....

No one knows as we have no idea what kind of stock Apple has for preorders. You chances are GREATLY increased if you do the 3am thing! I will I want a new watch.
If on the East coast. 12 midnight if on the West coast.
My alarm goes off at 3am anyway so this is a piece of cake!

I hear you OP. I was lamenting elsewhere that it would've been great had the watches been made available for order a day early in order to separate the traffic if nothing else.
I have a feeling that we could wake up at a more civilized hour and get what we want in terms of watches. But as others have said...you never know. I'm setting my alarm for 2:55am...

Getting up to get a phone, might as well grab a watch while i am awake. Friday is gonna be rough in the office.
Lucky for me I work nights. 12am is when I take my first break so it looks like I'll be making my first purchase using the Apple store app tonight. 
From what I have read, AW4 will be on high demand. Based on my past experience buying Apple product, whenever an item is tagged high demand you have to be on the shop site soon as they start selling. If not, you can easily get bumped to an additional week/s of wait to receive it.
Ah. I’ll wait and let you all fight the iphone preorder craze, and call dibs on the first batch, since I won’t be back in the US before the 28th. I’m still fighting with myself over the cost of the SS one
Only Apple knows I assumed it will be part of Watch OS update like 5.1 in the fall.

Like the other replies, if you want it on day one, you will get a better chance if you order yours at 3am.
Its 12AM here, right after our guild raid. Order watch at 12:01 and still have 30 minutes to look at my raid loots ;-)

I’m going to but won’t be upset if I don’t get it on launch day. I’ve never had a problem getting one but I’ve always got up at 1:45 got on the apple store app at 2:01 central, order then go back to bed.
