Just wondering if I'm connected via USB (essentially by cable), do I need to turn on the "personal hotspot" on my iPhone 5? ie I don't need to connect other devices via a Wifi or bluetooth. So if I'm only going via USB directly on my Mac Pro can I just plug straight in and it will show up and connect?

Yes you need to turn on personal hot spot to USB tether. When you flick the switch it will ask you if you want Bluetooth and Wifi as well or just USB.

Ok thanks. But by turning it on is it emitting the "hotspot" for neighbours to see?

Pretty sure its not but you can turn WIFI off when tethering to be 100 percent. In addition the WIFI hotspot on the phone is password protected for access.
