Do Iphones needs to have the same firmware in order to connect to each other?

My friend and I were trying to play 'Call of Duty: Zombies' together but we couldn't seem to join the same game via bluetooth or local wifi. We both, however, could connect to other people online. After trying to figure it out for a while I gave up. i am running 3.1.3 and he is running 3.1.2. Could this be our problem? When we both enable bluetooth neither of our devices shows up on the other. If this shouldn't be a problem any ideas of what this could be?

no. there is no difference between 3.1.3 and 3.1.2 besides patches to people from jailbreaking an unlocking.
