I am trying to gauge if 8 gigabyte of rams will be enough for my needs currently and in the future. I am planning on using the laptop for school, (Some twitch stream viewing, web browsing, YouTube, and etc.)

Do most students buy their MBP with 8 gigabyte or 16 gigabyte of ram from your experience?

Yes 8GB is enough for this purpose. Unless you like to have 100+ tabs open.
Also, you can probably do the same on a macbook air.

Absolutely not: as everyone on these forums knows, since the release of the 64GB 16" MBP there is no way you can browse the Internet on macOS with anything less than 32GB. /s

Just kidding... honestly, 8 GB on a MBA would be enough for your use case.
Bumping up to 16 GB might make sense in case you plan to get into something more demanding outside of your school activities, but that's your call.

i can speak with authority on this topic. Most of my undergrad students have inexpensive windows machines, with typically 2/35 or so having Apple products, and 1/70 or so having a MacBook Pro. Many of my undergraduate students have 5 year old windows machines with some having 7 year old or older windows machines.

My graduate students tend to have newer computers, but the windows/Mac distribution is still roughly the same as undergraduate students.

I have never seen more than 8Gb on a student computer.
