I have a broken top case, warranty claim pending (not material to this post, in any case), and just learned they are on backorder until January 7, 2008. I have to buy another computer in the mean time to stay productive.....

Perhaps a better moral: Do Not Get A Macbook Pro.
The MBs are tougher. Aluminum's pretty,
but it's barely better than a laptop made of glass.
I buy a computer to do work, to take hits...
not to dent at the first brush with a bedpost. :^)

Are you clumsy???

Sometimes! Thank goodness I've never been clumsy with an MBP, though. :D No, I've never banged a computer into a bedpost. But the facts on paper and the facts in the field show the MBP is a dent-magnet in comparison to a lot of machinery out there. My statements stand!

For some reason "Do not break your MacBook Pro" sounds like a company disclaimer. Anyone remember "Do not eat iPod Shuffle?" :p

Also, is the case part on back order or is the computer?

Where do you live? I know here in Toronto there is a store called CPUsed that does repairs on macs. I got saved once because they sold individual replacement keys so I didn't have to buy a new keyboard from apple for $150.

Looks like the repair's been delayed until Jan 7 because of a parts issue. In the meantime, he still needs a computer.

Personally (but i'm at law school!), I'd press for a new machine if you believe the timeframe for repair is not reasonable.

Or just don't buy a bed frame that has bedposts.

The aluminum will dent, but the plastic on a macbook can also crack (do a search if you don't believe me). They're both prone to problems. The truth is, no 1" thin computer will take excessive hits well. That's just not what they were built for.

Now, I think you should invest in some new bedposts (or perhaps even a better pair of glasses if it's a frequent problem :p)! ;) :p

OP, have you considered hooking your mbp up to an external for the time being? From your OP, I couldn't really gather what exactly wasn't working.

thats impressive how apple will repair the dent

I bet Apple would introduce a SteelBook if majority of laptop users manage to break their hardware during the warranty period. Because AluminumBook sells so well I must assume that majority of laptop users avoid abusing their "precious".

I had an accident with my macbook pro today which involved me getting pushed (accidently, my roommate tripped over my dog... yes.. my small annoying dog, and fell into me) into the door frame with my macbook pro and it took what I feel is quite a decent hit directly on it's right side (while open mind you) into the door and there was not a mark on it. I was rather impressed to tell you the truth, especially after all the horror stories of such easy denting the aluminum is.

I think for a 1 inch thin laptop it is quite sturdy.
