Do not read this forum if you get jealous easy, I got a free MBP!

If you fixed her computer why doesn't she return the new one she bought and just use the old one again instead of you ripping her off whoever much a new MBP costs?

She gave him a dead-to-her laptop. His fixing it does not mean he has to return it as she gave it to him broken and useless to her.

He got lucky and it was an easy fix but by the same token she could have easily fixed it by playing around with it a little bit more.

If she returned her new laptop to take the old one back he would be fully within his right to charge a 'repair' cost of the 900 as quoted by apple. No prices were quoted so he can say whatever he wants.

Whether or not it's the decent thing to do or not, he is legally in the clear.

To the OP: Lucky fecker :)

I think the best barometer of whether this was kosher or not, is if he's okay with running into her - with, the revived laptop.

If she says "Oh, you fixed it, good for you!" then I see absolutely no problem. Remember there's something in everybody's lives - laptop or other - that sometimes gives you so much trouble, you'd rather take the hit and "move on," even if it starts working again, to avoid issues.

congrats. i can think of more than one story like this involving trading my computer expertise for a broken xbox 360,
4 controllers

and a bunch of games either "that were not supported by the 360" or "that the xbox couldn't read".

a quick call to microsoft and i had a backwards compatibility disc, and did a 'hardware reset' + cleared the HDD cache.

xbox 360 works fine, just has to try a couple times.

but for free who cares!

What he said^

Her: Hey you can tinker with it. I don't know what to do with this dead laptop anyway. More than likely i'll throw it out or give it away as spares. You got all my data off it for me, so giving it to you for spares would be a nice way to say thanks.

Him: Cool i'll see what i do with it. Probably not much since apple said it needed a 900 dollar repair.

Later...

Him: Oh look i repaired your laptop.

Her answer eirther:
A. Well i thought it was dead and was going to get rid or it anyway. Go on keep it.

Or

B. Hey that's my laptop. I know i thought it was dead and was going to throw it out but now that it's working i want it back. I don't care how much time and effort it took you to fix it...

...
...

I'd go with A :)

A lot more responses to this thread than I ever would have though!

A. She knows the computer is operational and doesn't care. She has a new umbp and wanted to get rid or her old Santa Rosa. I don't think that falls into the category of thievery!

B. I am probably just going to give it to my parents anyway, as I just bought a new umbp as well... See sig.

C. The disk was corrupt so my iMac (in target disk mode) didn't mount the mbp's HD but it could see that it was connected when I checked out the System Profiler. The data recovery software force mounted the disk so I could use disk utility to repair it. The software is good, saved my external once and now saved this mbp. To fix the screen I reset the NV and P RAM and magically it lives again!
