I know that's why people are excited about retina. I'm trying to say that you cannot simply compare sdtv and hdtv and say that the same thing is happening on the ipad. a resolution higher than 1080p on a 10" screen doesn't mean anything in terms of video like it would on an hdtv because no one would be able to tell the difference between that and a lower resolution like 720P. good attempt though.

that's exactly correct.

However, there will (i'm guessing) be 'apps' etc, made for this that HDTV can't run, so perhaps it is a good analogy, all things being equal.

I think you're looking into this too deeply. Can you tell the difference between watching a show on a regular TV and an HDTV? Have you played an Xbox 360 on a regular TV and tried playing it on an HDTV? The resolution increase is immediately apparent. And why compare to 720p? That isn't half 1080p. 480p is actually closer. 720p is still HD obviously.

Why are people trying to compare watching a movie on an iPad and an HDTV? Do you not understand the concept of an analogy? If I say Tiger Woods is the Michael Jordan of golf, would you come back and say, " No you're wrong Tiger Woods is much better than Michael Jordan at golf."

i think a more effective analogy would be viewing a DVD vs. a blu-ray of a movie like "Cars." Both look fantastic, but the blu-ray will look so much sharper, which is what retina will be.

I guess i'm in the minority when i say the screen on the iPad 2 is not fantastic, everytime i read something on my 4s, then read something on my iPad i am reminded that the screen is terrible
