If you have one personal email account then using a web based email via browser might be fine. If you have only have a few email accounts then Mail is probably ok. If you have three, four or more email accounts from multiple email services using POP, IMAP, etc.. or you use multiple accounts for business then a more advanced dedicated third party application like MS Outlook, Thunderbird, etc.. would be a better choice.

I like that it is included as part of the OSX/MacOS but after using it years ago I found that the Mail app was too generic and vanilla. It just didn't work well for the number of personal and business related email accounts I utilized. I had to go back to MS Outlook (as part of the MS Office H&B for Mac suite) before I was satisfied. It was a combination of personal preference and functionality that helped make the decision for me and MS Outlook for Mac has actually been superb.
