Do the newer penryn 24" imac still have backlighting/gradient issues?

After I sell my mbp on my sig (very close to it) I'm thinking about getting a 24" iMac as it would suit me perfectly.

But the only thing that's making me nervous is that I read in various places that the 24" exhibits from the terrible backlight bleeding, gradient issues, uneven backlighting across the screen, and even yellow spots.

Has it be mostly cleared of those problems?

Nope, not at all. Just got another one and it still displays pretty much all the issues you're talking about. Have had 5 or so and they've all been pretty much the same.

My guess is, most of the people who say their screens are perfect just do not see the actual problems because their eyes aren't trained to. Ignorance is bliss, I suppose.

Ive got my iMac in my Window. (not on it :p) The screen never bothers me, Most of the time you wont notice, and if you look for a reflection.. you can't see anything. Plus I make my room darker most of the time :)

I'd read enough comments about screen issues that I was concerned. But I tried to find issues when looking at the screens in stores and saw no problems. I bought a 24". Backlightening looks pretty darn even to me even when looking at a solid gray or blue screen. I don't see any bleeding, or flashlight effects even when I try to look critically. LCD screens are somewhat prone to some uneven back lighting -- look at the user reviews of televisions on www.avsforum.com -- very critical. I may be blind or uncritical but I can't see any problems.

It has nothing to do with ignorance. It doesn't matter if the screen has gradient issues or not, it's all about the user. If their eyes see a clear screen then that's all that matters, everybody has a different perception. I strongly suggest the OP take a look at the iMac and see if it looks good to him, not the MR forum members.

I'm pretty anal when it comes to displays. I've returned a mbp just because of a slight yellowish tinge to the bottom 12 times last year. Also I've owned the 2x 20" acd (which was nearly perfect), 2x23" ACD (one of them had the pink hue) and been through 3x 30" ACD (all had the left side was brighter than the right which drove me crazy so I ended up returning it).

Its very hard to determine the screen at the apple store where its so brightly lit and when you take home the screen its ALWAYS totally different.

The ACD's are pretty darn good, one of the best displays out there, I think the 24'' Imac screen is nearly perfect, but with you returning so much I think there is a decent chance you will notice an imperfection when looking hard for it.

I have gone through 2 24" iMacs this past week due to stuck pixels and now today I am going back to the store because this screen has a horrible brightness gradient. The left 1/3 is super bright and white, the right 2/3 are dim and whites look "dirty".

I am so disguested with this machine right now.
