They won't send it anywhere. Our local Apple Store has drawers full of replacement keys (seriously). Based on your picture it should take about 10min to replace those keys, and be covered under warranty.

I can agree that my Dad has his less than 6 month old PBG4 in over Christmas and besides the store dropping it and having to send it off to Austin for more repairs than originally anticipated (it went in with a bad hard disk and left after having the top and bottom casings, LCD, VRAM, and other components replaced due to the "oopsie"), I did notice some ink marks on the function keys the guy couldn't wipe off. In less than 20 minutes, he returned from the back with a new keyboard in place.

How about on the MacBook? And if they do is there a place to buy cheap keys and not the entire top casing?

I doubt you can buy individual keys anywhere since we live in a "component remove and replace" society. I'm sure you could find a junker for parts on eBay though. My problem is if I did, I'd still be where I am right now in less than a month or so with key wear.

Does anyone know how easy it is to "pluck" so to speak the keys from a newer MacBook or MBP? I know on the original iBook and PowerBook G3's it was fairly easy due to the mounting Apple used as I sold one that needed a keyboard replacement since it was the display unit at Sears (what a crazy venture to enter retail if you ask me.... but....).

The family was quite happy to buy at $1599 computer at the time for less than $500 knowing they could get a free keyboard under warranty from Apple due to failure. Took less than 10 minutes to fix and made their daughter very happy for her birthday.

you can remove individual which are sold for keys for 3€ each plus tax (€3.60/$4.24) in europe,

BUT--> Apple refuses to cover this outside the US although they say they do on paper world wide within the first year of purchase!

The original illuminating PowerBook keyboard was built as that. The newer keyboards use masked paint.

More interesting would be, are any companies either going to make some clear skin for the keyboard, or even better, aftermarket black keys! *drool*

I use my very heavily and it has yet to show any of these problems. I am interested to know how Apple handles this problem with regards to the warranty in and out of the United States.

"As for getting things like this fixed, there's no chance"

Don't be so defeatist. I wrote a very polite letter of complaint to Steve Jobs and to cut a long story short, Apple Executive Relations recalled my machine for investigation and sent me a new one.

:)

I have owned my mac book pro for two weeks, and already i noticed the finish coming off. This really angers me. I mean thee computers cost so much, this shouldn’t be happening. The old power books didn’t have this problem, I mean two weeks! I shouldn’t pay $3000 for a new computer and then have to spend more money for protection so it won’t get messed up. They make them so they won’t get messed up. I’m seriously looking into a lawyer for a class action lawsuit on this one. This is ridiculous! Plus, the keys don't always respond when I press them.

D'oh. Class action indeed.

Give Apple a call to get it fixed under warranty, then get on with your life....

hajime

the keys are plastic and painted and if you use any alcohol (vodka on up) on them thinking it will clean them you will just take the paint off....i know because i used lacquer thinner on the keys and totally wiped the key paint off---i had thought they were stamped aluminum with plastic inserts. and at some point unless you get a cover every key will begin to wear off....

from reading online, speaking to people and all the past experiences show that Apple refuses to acknowledge any wrong doings ever until the heat is on by enough people, they try to drag out until most products reach the end of there warranty period from the time of sale.

This is a sign of a greedy and selfish company that is already reeking money in from Apple care!, apple def believes that problems attract new PC to Mac users who love feeling special for been the problem solvers for free and these geeks are the very reason other suffer.

they should have a refurb outlet just for yuppies like that so they can fix there computers every day and get awards like options to use a icon in the apple discussion forums., look at how many posts some of those idiots have, i read the profile of one guy where it said had 6.740 posts in the last year and a half, the guy seemed to argue allot and demand certain posts where removed for not been general issues with the users macs, if he does not work for Apple then what does he do with all his time, who feeds these geeks!

aluminum is what they charged me for, they changed them to plastic with out notice while charging people the price of aluminum keys..not cool!
