I'm in a friendly argument with a fellow jail breaker regarding these three themes. I'm in the camp they are somewhat similar and he states they are not and each is creative in its own rights without sharing or 'lifting' from one another.

    Your thoughts?

    Theme 1 Simple Flat:

    Theme 2 Maple:

    Theme 3 Liminal

You can tell there are distinct differences in very specific aspects of the icons.
But the layout is generally the same for all of them.

I'd go with they are all similar, definitely.

the similarities don't make them similar. looks like 3 separate designs to me...

Other than being flat, they are completely different designs when it comes to colour palettes and imagery.

i.e. first is using subdued colours, second is using a mix of bright/subdued colours, and third is using pastel colours.

Only colour I see in common is white.

Very similar. Same? No. Cues from one another? Sure, or a 4th we aren't seeing. That's inevitable with anything though, unless one truly comes up with something new under the sun. I don't see that happening.

None of them look good to me though. Not my style at all. Looks like the early days of South Park....like either a child made it, or it's made for a child.

    They're all flat.

Beyond that it doesn't look like they ripped each other off.

And now we see one of the difficulties of Sir Jony Ive's flatheadedness.

There's only so many color and so many "icons" you can use on a flat background. Because the icons are flat they all bear a resemblance. The only difference is the styling of the icon inside the flatness.

And the choice of color of course.

    Yawn.

that makes absolutely no sense. that's like saying that all paintings are gonna be similar, because they're painted on a flat canvas.

It's flat. You can change the color of the background but the icons are all white. How many shapes can you use to indicate email, SMS, photos, video or anything else with a common use in iOS?

It's all a variation on one theme - flat.

Maybe it makes no sense to you but it makes perfect sense to me.

you couldn't have said it better. even though i am starting to like the new flatter design of ios, the first thing i installed after jailbreaking my iPhone 6 was ayecon. i miss depth and class. this new flat stuff is like a tee shirt while classic ios is like a nice classy button down shirt :D lol my analogy was weird but you get the point.

if you're saying that there are limited shapes to indicate email, etc...how does that change with a more-3D icon? the artwork isn't defined by the canvas (in this case, a flat canvas), but by the designer's ideas. flat is the CANVAS, not the art ON the canvas.

just my thoughts of course...

You can create perception on a flat surface. But iOS and it seems the themes I see above do not utilize that.

I'm no fanatic about skeumorphism either, it has it's bad points too, but changing the shape of the icon itself and the color of the box behind it is simply a variation of stock iOS and you can only go so far with it.

3D, or the perception of it is not in an of itself a major change either. If you're going with nothing but a white icon in a colored background then there is not much difference between these themes.

Just my opinion. I'm guessing by now that we see this very differently, LOL! :D

EDIT: Sure, there is some color in some of these icons and not all are simple white icons. But overall, and I guess it's just me then, I don't see a whole lot of difference here.
