I think I read an article that says MBP that are a few years old will not be fixed by Apples stores anymore.
At the same time I think I read somewhere that MBP from a few years ago are elligible for free changing of the display?

I helped a friend take a MacBook Pro to repair the faulty anti-reflective coating in the display that was covered by an Apple program a few years ago. The Apple Store did not repair it in store but instead sent it to a repair facility to change the display. I speculate that changing display now will still be handled in the repair facility. Plus, most Apple Stores around the world are closed now. Mailing it to the repair facility is the only option if you want repair now.

Do they replace the whole display (the lid part of the laptop that closes) or just the coating?

Since when did they start doing that? For which year models?

So 2014 models became uneligible from December 2019?

Wow that really is a bummer.

Mine has not only the coating problem, but I dropped it and a corner has black smudges and it has a thin light going through the middle of the screen. It's still useable but it would have been nice to get a new display for free.

And I actually went to an Apple store on I think maybe November 2015, and this program started in October 2015, but they refused to fix the screen because it was (only a few days or so?) past the 1 year warranty. They should have known about the program which I could have used to fix the whole display?

It does not hurt to get in touch with Apple Support to explain your situation and see what they can do. They might be willing to still cover it.

The program was for 4 years from purchase date. I just got my 2015 done as it was purchased in Feb 2017. I don't go to the Apple store, I would go to an authorised repairer. The authorised repairer makes money from doing it, whereas Apple loses money doing it, so the authorised repairer is much more likely to tell you about the program and push for it.

As for other repairs take it to a third party. Apple only changes parts, the repairer will actually fix the problem and be much cheaper.

Are you sure this had nothing to do with the refusal?

OP:

I doubt you're gonna get a new display for free.
Having said that...

If you don't want to pay (probably going to cost 400-500), I see three choices:
- continue using it "as it is".
- replace it with something new or perhaps Apple-refurbished
- "fix" the Staingate problem yourself by removing ALL of the anti-glare coating. The display will now be "glossy", but at least it won't be "stained" anymore.

That's the way I see it...
