Do US Apple Stores activate the iPad if you ask?

UK Citizen travelling to New York April 1st - 10th.

I want to buy a US Ipad as its cheaper (also as an aisde, whats the Sales Tax in New York?). As I wont be bringing my Air, I wont be able to activate it. Will they help me out?
