Actually you can buy it in ABT.com and ship it to NY, and it is tax-free.

"
-Illinois- 9.75%

-Wisconsin- county sales tax determined by delivery point (5%-6.1%)

-Indiana- 7%

-Michigan- 6%

No sales tax is billed outside of these states.

OP:

Try:
portable one.com

They're in CA, and may not charge the sales tax when shipping to NY state.

No connection with them here, other than being a satisfied customer (as are a couple of my friends, as well).

You can even order Apple "build-to-order" items through them.

The funny thing is that we Americans think the UK/EU way of showing the VAT added price to be weird. It's just what you're used to.

It is a marketing trick if you ask me. Added tax price obviously will show higher price. Why show higher price when you can show lower. Also in a way saying the customer "Hey look, the State is collecting the extra you are paying, our price is actually not that high".
This may not seem much if you are buying lowered price items but if you are buying a $2000 Macbook Pro, then it is a lot of money depending on which state you are purchasing at.

It's not a marketing trick. The sales tax situation in the USA is completely different than the VAT in the UK/EU. There are 50 states plus DC in the USA. Each state has their own sales tax and in many instances, some cities/towns have additional sales taxes imposed.

If sellers were required to post after tax prices, then they'd have to post tens of dozens of prices dependent on where their stores are located. Sure, that's not that big a deal at each individual store, but then you have to think about advertisements and printed material.

For the most part, American are used to it. We know what the tax rates are in our own states and surrounding locations. We can do the math to figure out the final price. It's not a big deal because we're used to it.

The closest savings would be to make a trip to microcenter in Paterson NJ. They are a good retailer for apple products, and I have gone there to make purchases. The area is a special tax zone in New Jersey at 3.5%.

Is it in a safe part of town?

I have to disagree. Same thing with $9.99 instead saying $10. Do stores want customers to see the price as $9.99, make them think it is only $9 and do not even think about the cents part of it OR do they want them to see $10.70? When I buy something, I always add the tax in my head. Not everyone is like me or you. My wife tells me it is only $299, nope it is $318!
