I don't think Paul McGuinness is about nuance. He is about brute force.
He mentions Apple and the ISPs because they have the deep pockets.
He is more in the mold of Peter Grant. Shrewd and ruthless.

I don't remember U2's manager recording any of their hits. He just makes money off the band like everyone else.

Stealing is stealing, and I'm not into it. In any form.

But, I think this guy is off on a serious bender.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if I go to Wally World and buy a U2 CD, I can then take that CD home, rip the music into my comp, and upload to the net.

If I buy the same Album from iTunes, I would have to burn the music to a CD, then Rip it back into the comp to remove the DRM, then upload to the net.

Seems to me CD's are the easiest way to steal music, if you wanted to do such a thing.

U2 sells 4 million albums and then plays in front of 2 million paying fans in a single year, making them $400 million per tour. Yep, 2 million people who pay to see them play their newest songs, along with some classic hits. Does U2 truly believe that 50% of the fans that bought their latest album went out to their concert? Surely that's a bit overoptimistic.

Or maybe.....juuuuuust maybe.....82.7 million people around the world have their album, purchased or pirated, and this creates demand for their concerts and drives up ticket prices.

If U2 really only sell 4 or 5 million copies of their latest album, and 5% of these people end up going to their concert, there's no way they'd earn as much as they do now. Little demand for their concerts, lower prices.

Piracy is definitely not hurting U2. It is probably hurting some bands out there, but the best way to make yourself big, valuable, and in demand is to get massive numbers of people to listen to your music and become fans.

Maybe he should convince the band to go independent and rely solely on talent to make money. If the record companies weren't thieves to begin with, consumers wouldn't have been driven to do the same. I do agree that stealing is stealing, I know it's wrong and I don't feel the need to justify my actions.

I guess this means I can quit waiting on the release of an iPod Touch U2 Special Edition...

Maybe just maybe if Bono would shut his yap about political issues and just sing he would make more money.

Don't Mess with U2

U2 is the greatest band of all-time.
I just wish they would complete the new album so all the loyal and faithful fans like myself can enjoy it. :apple:

wow, this guy is off his rocker. i see no reason for such a thing to be put in place. i surely won't be buying anything from U2.

Unspeaked, what band is the greatest of all time then? As stated before, U2 is hands down the greatest band of all-time in my opinion.

You know, that's what I never understood about record companies who are against DRM free online music. I can buy a CD from a store, rip, and upload it just as easily as I can buy it from an online store and upload it. At least now the labels are coming to their senses.

As far as this guy, he's nuts.

Would that include the U2 iPod?

Ah, the full quote was:

He suggested that Apple and other makers of digital music players were wrongly profiting from their "burglary kits. Unless I get given some cash of course. Then they're bloody fantastic things and I still get to talk out of my arse, a bit like Bono does."
