Unspeaked, what band is the greatest of all time then? As stated before, U2 is hands down the greatest band of all-time in my opinion.

There's a great many bands whose careers I'd rank ahead of U2 both in musical talent and cultural impact, some of which I'm a fan of and others which I'm not.

To name a few: The Kinks, Queen, The Beatles, The Talking Heads, The Clash, REM, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Radiohead and The Who.

Of course, this is just my opinion.

I thinkthe problem is not what happens to U2, yeah they are making serious $$$ and in saying that they are possibly losing serious $$$ as well.

How about all the other not so super bands out there who actually rely on the money received from album purchases etc etc. So U2 won't notice $1000 here or there, but that joe average band that you really like may not exist much longer if their songs are being ripped illegally.

U2 and other super bands need to stand up and defend all artists, it isn't just their sales it is all sales.

Yeah I am a U2 fan, have bought every album, and even bought the U2 collection on iTunes after I was given the U2 iPod.

I definitely agree with the ones I colored RED! :D :D

While it's technically stealing, the music industry needs to realize that the old system doesn't work in the modern world. Innovate or perish. Find a better way that makes us want to spend money.

This is a bit like a vinyl company getting mad at the record industry for switching to cd's. They could bitch and whine and hold back progress, or they could realize that switching to producing cd blanks and continue to profit will mean even more profit because people will buy everything again in the new media.

It's time for the music and movie industries to find a model that will work with todays reality. I believe they have a right to profit from their talent and work. But they don't have a right to hold back progress and their consumers ability to enjoy their product to the fullest.

I don't have the answer for them. But if I were them I'd figure it out. Fighting progress will not work for long. They need to be leading us with new things we can't stand not to buy rather than trying to hold us back to a model that died in the 90's.

I am fifty two ...
Who the devil is U2 ? :p

*Maybe* they are the greatest band in *your* time! eh? :p :D

Note: sarcasm spoken here!

Have you been living under a rock? The biggest band of the 80's and 90's and possibly today and you have never heard of them? Jeez.

All good music died when " disco " started! :D :D :D

Honestly ... as big as U2 is/was .... I don't think they were the " greatest band of all time ".

Well, nobody's perfect!

:D

While I'll admit there's a huge different between greatest band and biggest band, I would also argue U2 is not the latter, either.

Case in point: they have not a single album in the Top 10 in sales for the decades of the 1980s, 1990s or 2000s. You would think the biggest band in the world, if not the greatest, would manage to crack that list.

Only because the Bee Gees and Donna Summer set the bar too high for any subsequent act to surpass...!

;)

Oops, I honestly didn't see your sarcasm note. I was in a big rush to comment because I thought you were actually serious about never hearing about them. Can we at least agree that they are a great band and up there with the best bands of all-time? Just look at the Joshua Tree, Achtung Baby and All That You Can't Leave Behind- these are some of the best albums in music history and highlight U2's musical and lyrical abilities. Not only are they a great band, but strive to better the world community. Just look at Bono's Africa Mission and the Edge's Katrina service. This community outreach adds to the band's legendary status and is one of the many reasons why so many people worship U2.

Ok, maybe not the greatest in terms of album sales, but look at Grammy Awards. U2 has won 22, the most by any band in history.

The Grammy doesn't carry as much weight as it used to. Look at the artists that win it now.

There is technology now ... is called SIMRAN. Throughout this conference you will see contact details and information. I recommend you look at it. I should disclose that I’m one of their investors.

Sounds like he's personally trying to endorse a back-up revenue stream. No conflict of interest there.

... it is hogging bandwidth that ISPs are increasingly going to need for other commerce, especially as a legitimate online market for movies develops.

Are his movie torrents not downloading fast enough?

oh god.

they are good. but not the best.

I'm guessing I'm the only one who can't stand U2? Yeah, good humanitarian work and all, but the music....I'd rather listen to fingernails on a chalkboard

Thats ok, even as a huge U2 fan I won't hold that against you, there is plenty of music I can't stand but others love.

As to the best bands subjective discussion, there is not such thing as THE best band, more there is a group of bands that share the title. The ones whose music last and never seem to go bad.

U2, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Led Zeppilin, Queen, etc.

This Sunday:
Herbie Hancock, Aretha, Amy Winehouse and
100 pre-telecast award going to very deserving and talented small niche artists from all over the world. Not to mention the songwriters, engineers, producers, album artists, etc.
Quite different than the AMAs which award on record sales only.

It was slightly better this year than others, but nothing I'd be bragging about...

You only see a few catagories on the tv show and they are the ones that the network thinks will get viewers.
The "real" Grammys takes place before the cameras roll, at the pre telecast awards. 100 catagories that the public never sees because they are so outside the mainstream.

That "Irish" band where half the members are good old English? If Bonio gave all his wealth to developing nations I might respect him more.

I think you mean Queen are one of the worst bands in history. Utter pompous garbage.

But this is beside the point, whether you like U2 or not who gives a damn? The point is you shouldn't be simply stealing music the way you shouldn't be stealing anything else - what gives you the right? Would you mind people hacking into your Mac and stealing your data? I think not. Only opportunity seems to have made thieves out of thousands of people who probably otherwise claim to lead supposedly moral lives. I think U2 are sticking up for all artists, not just themselves, so I support what they're saying. And yes, I am a fan, but with limits.

No more pompous than U2, and at least as talented.

That's all fine and good, but I think the argument here is that implication than ANYONE using an iPod is stealing music, and that iPods are made for that purpose.
