First computer I ever bought (flowerpower iMac), I ended up having the optical drive replaced five times (four times after the first year), and they replaced my mouse when the cord got frayed. The sheer amount of money I saved due to Applecare has pretty much assured me that I'm going to buy it for every single Apple computer I buy from here on out. Getting about $1000 worth of parts and labor out of a $150 warranty basically means that even if I have no problems on the next four macs I buy, I'm still ahead.

It's a tough choice. With laptops and MicroSoft products (Xbox-died after 1 year and 4 days and Xbox 360- still going so far) I buy extended warranties. As far as TVs, DVD players, iPods and what not I don't. Most things if they're going to fail do so under their original warranty.

Euro v's Dollar AC price difference

Schmintan, I hear ya boss.

A big issue here in Ireland is the cost of Applecare here compared to our lucky cousins across the pond - $349 in the USA versus €449 here, which is the equivalent of $613! Not quite twice the price, but not far off.

I'm two weeks away from my one year anniversary and have already had several issues with my MBP, covered under the warranty. Seriously considering purchasing AC - I bought the MBP in the States, but live back here in Ireland now. Does anyone know if I can buy the significantly cheaper US version, given that the machine was bought in the US, but no longer resides there?!

Those "international" issues are pesky, aren't they? I'd assume the hang-up there would be that if you bought US AppleCare, you'd be beholden to Apple USA to get repairs done, and I'm pretty sure they don't ship boxes internationally. Are you a citizen of Ireland who bought the machine in the U.S., or a citizen of the U.S. who's living in Ireland? I'd assume that makes all the difference.

i wanted to get it with my pb, but i didnt have enough money. in the end i figured the 300 some bucks it cost was too much. ive tried to treat my pb like a baby instead but with this lousy going to sleep randomly problem, im half upset i didnt get applecare and the other half pissed that apple messes up on these sort of problems

The former, but I don't see how that would make a difference. AppleCare is meant to cover repairs globally. I assume, especially for portables, this means that if you have a problem when you're abroad for whatever reason, that you're covered in that country.

I've heard of people buying US Applecare on Ebay for MBP's that live in Europe, and having no problems, but I'm a bit nervous of doing that. You obviously get an authorisation code, so you don't necessarily need the physical box.

I hadn't gotten it before I got my MacBook Pro, but after this, I'll be getting it on all my Macs. Save for the Mac Mini I'm going to get, but that's because I'm going to use it in a mod.
