Do you buy GPS only, or GPS + Cellular?

If it wasn’t an extra $10 a month I would agree. I can understand your situation, you have a wife and kids, it makes sense to have that in place for emergencies. I don’t have a wife or kids so worst case if something did happen to my phone I would just go home and hop on my computer/iPad and make an Apple Store appointment to get it fixed. It’s not a one size fits all solution.
For 33 cents a day or 120 bux for the whole year is worth to me for the added peace of mind. Surely there are other situations where a comms backup would be important but everyone does have different circumstances and lifestyles. I only argued that phones are not indestructible or impervious to theft. Anyways, I make money to spend, not to stare at, but to each their own.

Those that want cellular have their reasons and very valid ones. Those that don’t want cellular also have very valid reasons for not wanting it.

This isn’t a situation where there is one correct answer for everybody folks.
Of course… but the OP was asking for questions and here we are providing answers to them using real life situations. That was kinda the point of this thread.

Indeed and without being patronising in return, I think it’s beneficial to hear from owners of both types of watch in order to provide the best possible feedback to their answers. There isn’t a right answer.

Hello everyone.

So I’m back, after a two day ban from MacRumors!

Someone was really digging into me on my other post (where I was questioning whether the AW is for me or not) and I gave it back to him. Anyway, next thing, I get banned from the forums.

This has happened to me before. I’m starting to think it has something to do with my screen name?

Anyway!

I returned the GPS watch, and have received my refund. I have a click & collect order with John Lewis, which is ready for collection. However, they now have stock for collection at my “local” Apple Store. I’m thinking of letting the JL order go back for refund (I’ll simply not collect it) and buy it directly from Apple.

I like Apple’s return policy, and if there are any issues or the watch simply isn’t for me (even with cellular) I’ll be able to return it, no questions. The same cannot be said for JL, so I’d be stuck with it. However, John Lewis gives a two year guarantee, so there’s that to consider. Having said that, with consumer law in the UK, you’re covered past the 1 year standard warranty anyway.

So, if you were me would you collect the JL order, or buy direct from Apple?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Surprised you didn’t start another thread about this or a poll 😂

If you have the choice go with Apple.

As you've stated, UK consumer law gives you a 2 year warranty regardless. Should you need to claim from Apple you only have to mention this, they won't go out of the way to tell you though.
And yes Apple will take the watch back no questions asked within 14 days. I would say its best to try out the cellular feature and see if its for you. Trying it is the only way to be certain.

Buying from Apple is the most risk free option.

As with others, go with Apple for the added return/exchange period.

Regarding "trying out" cellular... be aware that some of the benefits of the cellular model also come with the change of paradigm (leaving phone behind) which doesn't necessarily occur within a 14 day return period. My point is don't be surprised if you're not suddenly overwhelmed with amazement. :D

I’ve placed the order with Apple.

They really do look after you, and having the return buffer gives peace of mind.

However, I really do think the AW with cellular will offer the full potential of the device.

I believe the reason I returned the previous watches was because I couldn’t get my head around having to carry my iPhone with me to get use out of the watch.

I think I’ll just keep this one, and at least say I’ve given it a good try, to see if it’s for me.

Thanks for your advice 👍.

FYI, there are ways you can get use out of the watch without a phone. Apple Pay doesn't need it. When I'm at home I never have my phone with me and the watch just uses my WiFi for connectivity. When I'm at work my phone can be on the desk and the watch can still connect to it a good distance away via Bluetooth.

Thanks for the advice.

I just managed to order a SS model, for collection from my local Apple Store. This obviously comes with cellular as standard.

I was going for the aluminium model with cellular, but then realised that the SS model was just £130 more, so I decided to go with that.

It has cellular as standard, and is apparently more durable and classy, so I thought I may as well go for that.

I feel you have made the choice that I would had made as I feel it makes the watch more standalone. The GPS model will connect to open WiFi (if the WiFi you want to use has a captive portal then you are out of luck). I find that many places that I want to use has a captive portal.

Yep I’ve experienced this as well and it’s super annoying.

I’ve had cellular in Series 3 before, but have purchased SS4, 6, 7 all with GPS only. I don’t miss cellular as I always have the phone with me for photos.

For those who needs cellular for things like running, then you will know it. If you are not sure, you don’t really need it.
