In those scenarios I just use my other hand to cover when I'm entering the pin. We survived for years with iPhones without TouchID or FaceID.

I use a complex 12 digit passcode, and I I enter it as fast as possible with both thumbs when in public. Doesn’t eliminate the possibility of someone figuring out the code, but I figure the Israelis (Pegasus/NSO) already have all my data from one hack or another.
I’ve tried this on a couple of iPads, and doesn’t work. Maybe I could get lucky once I have my 13 mini, who knows. I’ll definitely give it another try.
Not all of us are blessed with 3 hands - 1 to hold the phone, 1 to shield it from prying eyes, and 1 to enter the PIN. 😆
For the OP, I clearly see people’s PINs daily. It’s so obvious especially if it’s a numeric pin.

Wow, I didn't know I had 3 hands. All this time I thought I was holding the phone with my left hand and entering the pin with my left thumb while covering that with my right hand!

It’s a low risk, but TouchID and FaceID weren’t just introduced for convenience. It was to add peace of mind security.
It’s always bothered me, but never concerned me much.
It’s not like I’m on national television with the President and typing 000000 into my phone while it’s in direct, plain site of the news cameras… 🤦🏼♂️😂😂
I am in the camp that wishes Apple would’ve included TouchID into the power button while retaining FaceID for iPhone 13. It would’ve helped people navigate the pandemic a lot more safely, conveniently and securely.
I’m sure Apple sees it as a cost saving measure not to do it and that once they introduced it they would be expected to stick with that. Plus they would rather push people to buy an Apple Watch, which is some real BS, but it’s whatever.
