I wonder why Apple decided to have the new MBP's (since 2016 models, I believe) power on automatically when connected to a power source or when the lid is opened.

I will give it another month or so before I decide whether to go back to the old ways of actually having to push the power on button.

Anyone else thinking of or have gone back to the old way?

I'm happy with leaving it. Whenever I open it, I'm intending to use it - and in my case, I rarely power it off so 99% of the time it's just waking from sleep.

I've had instances where the laptop woke up, or never went to sleep while in my travel bag and when I pulled it out, it was way too hot for my liking. Since then I want to be sure its not going to wake up. This is where I really like the idea of shutting it down and thinking that when I shut it down, the power is off, but no more it seems :(

That's what I am afraid of. MBP being not completely shutdown (even though I turned it off) when I place it in my travel bag. How often did that happen?

Happened to me too.

So did you guys use the terminal command to disable auto on function?

I've had that happen many times on Windows laptops before, but only once with my 2013 MBP which I used for five years so I'm never worried about it happening on MacBooks.

Isn't Apple supposed to be on a mission to turn Macs into iOS devices? On an iPad with Smart Cover, shutting down the iPad and then opening the cover doesn't turn it on. So is that going to change with future iPads as well?

How would one go about disabling that?
You need to use terminal to change the setting.

STARTUP CHIME (on)
sudo nvram BootAudio=%01

STARTUP CHIME (off)
sudo nvram BootAudio=%00

DISABLE BOOT ON POWER AND BOOT ON LID OPEN
sudo nvram AutoBoot=%00

ENABLE BOOT ON POWER AND BOOT ON LID OPEN
sudo nvram AutoBoot=%03

@yukari wow I didn't even know I could get the startup chime back, it is one of the things I miss most and it kind of made MacBooks special back in the day. Thank you so much.

You are welcome. Glad I can be of help.
