Never mind, after a few hours messing with Arch I can safely safe that it defiantly isn't for me lol. Thanks for the help though.

Move onto the next one.

That's the great part about Linux it's not one size fits all!

Good Luck in your search, like I said earlier the distro will pick you not the other way around

Write it all down!
^ Best advice ever. Take notes when you do advanced setups like this so you can reuse it (Don't honestly believe someone who says they can remember all this, it's probably a lie at some point). I do it all the time with programming and howtos, tutorials, guides .. I made a really comprehensive bookmarks collection of everything Linux and misc stuff too (lots of interesting Reverse-Engineering, Security, Linux, BSD and much more) more than 3500+ bookmarks (some are private).

I know this probably isn't much help, but I wrote this down and this is my draft for my current setup:

It's with these requirements:
  • LVM (Easily Resizable partitions)
  • Encrypted root and swap
  • /etc as a partition, because it will never grow above 1GB anyways, and it's handy to keep your config files if you need to reinstall.
  • /var (optionally) as a partition, because if you have an SSD you can move the load onto the mechanical harddrive if you have both
  • continues the Arch guide up untill some point ...

If you want to base anything off this remember to read the guide before you attempt anything I wrote down.

Diesel79: If I were to recommend you an easier distribution I would say that Debian with a desktop comes a long way today - and also Fedora is a great choice :) both are easy to find professional online documentation for, whereas the other GUI dists usually have some newbs hoarding the forums with the wrong "sudo" command or the wrong "./configure" package installation outside the package manager (which is not at all recommended) .. You learn alot more and hang out with more experienced people if you choose a good base dist.

Thanks for the help and advice guys. To be honest I think I just got a bit frustrated with Arch. I should have got it installed and left it at that until tomorrow, but I was trying to get everything done at once. I think I was still a little stressed from the install itself. I installed Cinnamon de. vlc, Libreoffice gedit, docky, deluge, chromium. Then I hit a hurdle, and a really silly one at that. I couldn't figure out how to get flash player installed and working and Google didn't help much.

I was actually enjoying Arch and I found installing software with pacman -S much easier than install via the command line on ubuntu. Perhaps I should have another go lol.

Thanks again you've both been really helpful.
