If that was the case for the "360" naming (which I doubt) then why is the Xbox One competing against the PS4? :p
Because Miscrosoft decided to play off the hype of the product name "One", and they want you to think of the device as the only one you'll need. I sincerely doubt the next device will be called "Two".

I also doubt their next one would be called "two" as well. I was just pointing out that the model number means nothing. You said they didn't want to have xbox 2 up against PlayStation 3, when after they went with Xbox one (1) vs PlayStation 4. Having an even wider "gap" in numbering than they would have had with 2 vs 3 previously.

Yeah, but one of my points is that the term "One" has started to be used as a more prestigious title than just numbering higher and higher. I think iPhone One would have a better visual appearance to it than iPhone 1.

So then we are talking about a difference between a number and a word (that represents the number).

Pretty much. What other reason is there for companies to do it except that they want it to stand out and be different?

the iPhone 3G was actually the iPhone 2....
Then they went to iPhone 3GS.... then went straight to iPhone 4. The iPhone 3 never existed!

I was surprised some people didn't know which version their iPhones were... Personally, I don't care much about the numbers in iPhone models, though I'll be a little surprised if Apple decides to call the next iPhone anything other than 6S.
