I was wondering how you charge your new MBP.

I got mine last Tuesday and use the old 87W that came with my 2018 15" and use the USB-C cord that I bought a year ago from nomad. I do not need fast charging, so I don't use it, and the MagSafe end of the mac is not in the direction of the outlet, so I didn't want any bending/potential fraying. Also, does fast charging the mac really accelerate the degradation of the battery?

I also use AlDente on the weekends and limit charging to 75-80%. Is it worth it to use AlDente on the M1's?

Is there an option to disable fast charging on the new 14/16 mbp?
Nope, just have to use a different USB-C brick. The 16" seems a bit more worrying than the 14" since the 16 goes to 140W.

I'd say so, after all it's still the same chemicals and all in the battery.
I'm using mine docked a lot if not most of the time so this is still very relevant to me personally.

What do you keep your mac at? I try to vary mine every now and then and once a week do a drain and full charge.

Seems like it's okay to do 80% for the limit. And do a battery cycle every month. No need to do it every week AFAIK.

I'm currently testing out the 14" and am using my adapter and USB-C cable from my 1st Gen 2016 15" Touch Bar MBP. As far as I can tell it fast charges using the old brick which I believe is 87W. I don't think you need the 96w adapter but it has to be higher than the 67w that ships with the base model. I don't know what the threshold wattage is for fast charging to be triggered.

Same. I just lowered it to 50% though so I can occasionally drain it quicker.
But I feel like this will be a difficult tasks with these machines given how little power they use ?

But I suppose a little lower than 80% might do. Right now I've set it to 50%

So, this is the first I'm hearing of AlDente. It sounds like there are some of you that have been using it for a while. Are there any downsides in your experience?

I tried to plug in the 14-inch to the 30W adapter from the MBA and it still charged just very much slower. I think it depends on your current power consumption and the power brick you use. The system will decide the charging rate.

This is one reason I deliberately did not upgrade the charger for my 14" MBP from the standard 67W to the optional 96W.

Fast charging to 50% in 30 minutes is a charge rate of 1C, which exceeds the recommended maximum rate of 0.8C for optimal battery lifespan:

I find the 67W charger charges to 50% in about 50 minutes, which is fine for me

And this is the reason why I bought the 67 W charger for my 16 inch MacBook Pro max. Do not want to place too much stress on my battery. Fast charging for me is not needed.

I had some similar thoughts on this idea. I've got the new 16in and plan to keep it for 6+ years. The battery will last me all day so I plan to charge it a on a timer overnight so that it's at 80% every morning. This got me thinking, do I really need to be fast charging it at all. I picked up a 67W charger to use, wondering now if I should have gone for the 30W. As long as it gets it back up to 80% in 8 hours, I really could not care less how slow it's charging.
Weird thing though, if you look at the USB PD specs on all the chargers the 140W does 20.5V- 5A, the 96W 20.5V-4.7A, the 67W 20.3V-3.3A, and 30W 20V-1.5A
From what I understand the charger and computer talk to each other to make sure the right power levels are being delivered, but does one have to worry about that slight variation in voltage?

After getting the 67W charger from Apple for my 16”. I to am now looking at the 30W for an overnight charge since I don’t care for fast charging at all. I will get the 30W from anker and test it out and report back here. I even have a 29W charger from Apple so I’ll even test that one out as well. Anker has a smaller 30W charger than Apples 29W and I like small for travel.

Looking forward to hearing how it goes, thanks for doing all that testing!

I still have the 140watt charger unopened, might try to sell that since I truly have no use for it. The 87watt is good enough.

I use the 30W charger with the 14” and it’s great*. I also use the LG UltraFine 5K which charges the 14” at a decent rate. So far the new 96W charger is still in the wrapper and in the box.

AlDente Pro has been great. I usually leave the battery between 40% and 80%. I just have to remember to allow top up to 100% when I expect to unplug the Mac for a long while.

* Sorry if I’m repeating; I did mention this elsewhere in the forums.

Update:

16" M1 Max 32c 32gb 1tb...

1. 67w Apple power Brick working just fine
2. 29w Apple power brick working and adding juice during light work
3. 20w Apple power brick doing fine

140w supplied brick still in box.

I haven't used my Magsafe Charger at all, been using my laptop as a Desktop hooked up to my Thunderbolt dock and monitors...

Only taking the laptop off when I'm not at home basically.

Based on advice in the forums, I already received a 67W charger and new USB C to magsafe cable to use as my secondary charger for my incoming 16" MBP. I also purchased a lifetime AlDente Pro license on Black Friday, so plan to use that to manage charging and likely keep battery at 75% - 80%. My usage is ~90% while plugged-in.
