Benefits of Restarting
  • Clears RAM: Frees up memory by closing apps and processes that are running in the background.
  • Fixes battery drain: Helps recalibrate battery reporting and stops battery-draining app loops.
  • Improves connectivity: Refreshes Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and cellular connections.
  • Applies updates: Ensures pending system updates or background security definitions are fully applied.

Best Practices
  • Frequency: Restarting your device once a week is a great, healthy routine.
  • The Routine: Simply turn the device off, wait about 30 to 60 seconds, and turn it back on.

I'm not a big fan of turning my electronics off, phone or otherwise. It's been my experience that doing so only creates problems. But then, most of my stuff is old so that may be the primary issue.

In regards to my phone though, for a while there were a few iOS versions I was on where turning the phone off then back on meant an annoying loss of cellular connectivity for a short period. I don't have battery drain, although I am approaching the time where I will either need to replace the battery or get a new phone. And I manually apply updates. I also don't use a lot of apps (my phone is not a substitute for some other device) so there's never been any real need to clear ram.

Except for certain specific instances, my phone remains on 24/7.

A weekly restart feels like the digital equivalent of getting a good night's sleep. It doesn't solve every issue, but battery drain, Bluetooth glitches, and random lag seem much less common afterward. Anyone else make this a routine?

What are you people doing with your phones that you consistently run into battery drain, BT glitches, random lag, memory problems and other rando issues?

My iPhone doesn't have these problems and it's rarely turned off.

No. But if something isn't right, turning off and then on is Riley one of the first troubleshooting steps I'll do. I can't remember when I last did that.

I rarely fully turn off my iPhone however every once in awhile I may do a force reboot on my device. Never had a problem with any of my iPhones.

I turn my iPhone off every night. I'm not attached to it constantly checking it like most people. Although it's not my primaty phone, with an internet VoIP phone in that role.

actually I think this practice kinda help. Just today I encounter 2nd time speakers sound suddenly sound broken like that. I do hard reset and back to normal.

I Don't turn off my iPhone 15 in fact all along. Just that recently I encounter speakers sound broken so I do hard reset. I can confirm is not speaker fault is due to " software side " Beside this, I notice come scrolling etc seem Smooth.

Clears RAM Sure it does but iOS (and macOS) are made to use all they RAM they can. You’re slowing down your device by clearing that out. Not a good practice.

Fixes Battery Drain Processes can get stuck. This does work.

Improves Connectivity I seriously doubt this. It’s not going to do anything that turning off/on radios will do to rectify issues.

Applies Updates Yep. That’s how those work.

iOS/iPadOS are made to stay on all the time. They really don’t like being off.

Best practice is to leave them on until an update needs to install or there is an issue that nothing else fixes.

I also curious on iMac, it also claim is good to restart the iMac once per week too beside other iPad.

Over the years I reboot most of my electronics once every quarter or when an update comes through so far that has worked out well for me.

I stream youtube videos through my hearing aids.

I mean, do whatever you think works for you.
For me, I never turn my phone off, it gets rebooted upon OS updates and then the very rare occasion of some issue.
And for my Mac, same, it only gets turned off when I'm out of town for more than 2 days or so.
Never had a problem with that approach.

Now let me ask you, do you unplug your TV once per week per your "good advice"? it does have RAM ...

On the other hand, my Windows computers needed a reboot at least weekly, but now that I'm retired, I don't use that OS anymore ...

I wonder if any of these methods will cut down on the number of recycled AI slop posts from Reddit I see here 🤔
