I hope that they update the notification system but leave the rest of the UI alone. I know that a lot of people want widgets but often they just suck down your battery even faster. I had HTC Sense on my Touch Pro 2 and it was really hard to make it through a day of heavy use without having to charge the phone. Also all of those cool things eat up available memory for programs.

A few things I would like to see:
- an easier/quicker way to fully close running apps, preferably right when I exit them (the whole taskbar "hold and wiggle" thing is a pain)
- gesture-based multi-tasking
- better notifications (obviously!)

Nice to haves:
- real tabs in Safari
- better support of the SD card using CCK (allow easier storage and playback of media)
- more use of the top status bar (could show a lot more info up there)

Do you all expect anything that only the iPhone 4+ and iPad 2+ will be able to utilize?

You people (yeah, I said it) need to start mentioning the iPod Touch 4 in these sentences ! :p

But. Does it not have to be a MAJOR change?

If it's just another small list of improvements as normal, the why not call it 4.4, 4.5 4.7, 4.7, 4.8, or 4.9 ?

We got folders which was a quite major thing in 4.2 and a few small things in 4.3

You don't jump from a version 4.3 to 5.0 unless it's a major change do you?

Depends what you consider "major".

Yes 4.0 brought Folders...but what else? Overall, iOS looks the same today as it did in version 1.0, does it not? I mean we got the Multitasking bar along the way too but still, it looks practically the same as day 1.

Oh and FULL SCREEN Safari ! Like Atomic and co. Especially on the smaller variant iOS devices.

Oh and maybe Flash support? Or at least a flash for the camera? Or just make an App and call it flash and when you open it there's a video of Steve that tell you why you don't need it ! LOL ;)

As far as a UI overhaul to everyone that's "bored" of the homescreen, it's just not gonna happen. They constantly tout that it's similar to the iphone/itouch and that that's why so many people can pick it up and start using it so quickly.

TRUTH. Apple doesn't just change something like that "simply because." There needs to be a reason to do so, and it has to come with improvements or they won't do it. Being "boring" has to be the most silly argument against a UI design ever.

The main thing I would like to see in IOS5 is a real filesystem... one that can be shared among all apps. This is the one thing that, IMO, makes Android more powerful and more useful.

Why are you closing them at all? Just try not doing that. The only time I ever manually kill an app is if it's stuck/crashed.

iOS isn't Windows... The OS takes care of killing apps when it needs more memory.

I'm really, really hoping that ios 5.0 is when the operating system finally fragments. Honeycomb is unfinished but I can see how a tablet optimized OS can be much more practical/convient opposed to just blowing up a smartphone OS.

But knowing Apple that's not likely.... maybe.... who knows. They're doing psudo custom ios on Apple TV now.

I think apple had the right strategy releasing the iphone before the ipad (even though reportedly coming up with the ipad first) so that people would get used to the interface, build up the app store, etc but I can't help but wonder what it would have been like if they released the ipad first. Would everyone be going on about how the iphone/itouch os is just a shrunken ipad os and needs to be somehow drastically differentiated?

Same, that's my number 1 iOS gripe.

But I'd say there's not a snowball's chance in in hell that happens as Apple wants the device to be as simple to use as possible so the file system will probably always remained hidden and with simple import and export options in apps. :(

Apple isn't going to change the UI. That just isn't the way they work. Yes they may tweak it here and there and add additional features, but no major changes. Just look at Mac OSX.

I'm hoping for wireless sync. This is such a simple thing this day in age I don't understand why Apple is sitting on it. If they don't add this I will be jailbreaking for sure.

They could make some sort of wireless dock that has just a power plug so you don't have to tether it to your pc, but I can't see apple doing this overall.

A. Battery life. Syncing over wifi is going to be slower and use up much more battery life to do it. Apple won't want to sacrifice any if they can help it.

B. Piracy. If they're syncing over a common wireless data method like wifi they're going to have to have some way of ensuring that people can't just start capturing the packets to steal music, videos, books, etc. Then they'd have to convince each of the content providers that this is a secure method.

What's the lesser of the two evils? Give people wireless syncing like they want and deal with a little piracy, or have people jailbreak their device where you can download an app that ives ou access to all App Store apps for free?

I'm not trying to pick a fight, just playing devils advocate.

understandable.

Honestly, I'd say they're less worried about jailbreaking. (especially since they're already dealing with it.) like I said before, they'd have to convince the media rights holders that this is a good idea before they could just go ahead and do it. and that'd be a LOT more work than thwarting jailbreakers (who would still exist in both scenarios)

Though maybe once this NFC stuff is worked out they could use that since it's got security measures built in to it. Not sure how good it is for large data transfers though.

+ 1000, especially given my use case (see my sig...)

Despite what Apple claims about the way apps do and don't take up resources in the background, the number of apps showing in the multi tasking tray definitely impacts the performance of the device, at least in my case. Same with my iPhone 4 btw and that has twice the ram...

I think this will be wrapped into the MobileMe overhaul. Some stuff will sync free (contacts,.calendars, documents ,maybe apps) and other stuff for pay (e.g. photos and music, extra document space, etc).

I have to say though it'd be REALLY cool if you just told iTunes which content to sync (shows, playlists, etc) and it auto updated the OTA if you added a new song to a playlist for instance. Imagine NEVER having to plug your iPad into a computer. Throw in some wireless charging tech, and this NFC stuff and you've got the makings (admittedly much further down the line) for an iPad with virtually no buttons and no need for a dock port.

I never manually close Apps and occasionally it feels like swapping between Apps slows down but once I'm actually in the App everything works fine. It also feels like which Apps you are using has an effect. I used to use Feedler and switching away from it often felt sluggish; I've now moved to Reeder and have a lot less of those problems.

In any case I don't think that making it easier to manually close Apps is a good solution. I see it as a band-aid for more technical users. Surely a better solution would be for Apple to improve their automatic multitasking so that nobody needs to manually close their Apps.

How about fixing the clock so it syncs over wireless to a time server?

iOS 5.0:

1. New notification system
2. Cloud computing links throughout, including the ability to not have to sync with a computer, ever, while still backing up etc.
3. Improvements to lock screen, perhaps only on iPad.

It'd be nice if they utilized one of their beloved gestures for this. for instance 1 gesture switches apps/goes home, and adding a finger closes the app completely.

Now there's a spot they could really add nice features with widget like functionality. Like being able to add weather/ calendar/email info (unread alerts, etc) to the lock screen so you can quickly see at a glance what your notifications are. I know there are cydia apps for this but it'd be a great os level feature especially if devs could tap into it.
