Do you guy feel the "need" to get a New MBP Every year ?

I typically get a new MBA/MBP about every three years. If they don't get traded in on a new one they get passed on to a family member.

My last MBP was the 15" A1398 I bought 11 years ago. It went to my daughter and since then I have been using the MacBook Airs, going through a couple of the 13" which got replaced 18 months ago by a M3 15" MBA. It has been a good little machine, but is getting replaced by a 14" M5 MBP.

The 13" MBA was just a little too small and the 15" just a bit too big, so I'm hoping the 14" MBP will be the "sweet spot" for size. I really don't need to upgrade, but just wanted to.

I've always replaced my Macs when they're between 5-10 years old. The whole point of buying such a good (and expensive) machine is that it lasts. I buy a new one only when my work tasks slow down significantly or when I can no longer get the software updates I need.

My first Mac was a 2009 13" MBP that was my portable computer for a bit over 10 years, which was replaced with a 2017 MBP in 2019. My wife had gone through a number of Windows laptops in that time period. The 2017 MBP was replaced in 4.5 years with an M3 Pro MBP, for the following reasons: battery life was much better; performance was dramatically better; a lot more ports requiring fewer dongles - no longer needed an SD card reader, a mutifunction USB-C to HDMI/USB-A/USB-C adapter, though still need the USB-C to USB-A adapter occasionally.

The 2017 MBP needed a new battery - old one was good for maybe 30 minutes and is now my daughter's laptop. Both of my sons have M1 MBA.

I used to upgrade every 18 months but now they're good enough to last 5 years. I just get a new one whenever they refresh it. Makes the differences more enjoyable/noticeable

FWIW, I was considering getting a MacBook in 2007 or so based on reports of better battery life than Windows laptops. Started hearing rumors about LED backlighting and decided to wait for the 2009 models.

With an M3 Pro MBP and an M4 Pro Mini, I can afford to wait until the AI induced spike in memory prices goes away before upgrading again.

have a M4 Max MBP 16/40... that'll be fine for 7 years easily. it does most of the tasks i want super fast.
would like a Mac Studio to replace/ditch my PC entirely however... because the fat tower is still occupying a lot of space while pushing way too much heat out. Most likely M5/M6 version depending [max]

Not every year just when it offers something I have to have when my current model can't be upgraded.

I'm still using a 2012 MBP so I guess I'm overdue! However, I'm still using software that can only take Mojave so that ain't happening soon.
