It's his typical snide/rude style of response - people do it to promote themselves to superiority.

My new years resolution is to replace snide/rude posts, aka truthful ones, with threads about imaginary/fictional display problems. I might also make posts or start threads about Apple's next to be announced products, with dates, to the nearest 6 months maybe.

Snide and rude = truthful? Didn't realise another resolution was to try your hand at humour. I'd suggest dropping that resolution. ;)

No the iPad 5 will have the same exact specs as the iPad 4.... They will just call it the iPad 4s.....

Careful, you are courting an MR rule violating insult from WilliamLondon who will interpret this as snide and rude. Today is William's turn to play forum police.

Thanks for proving my point over and over and over again. :p

Can you please say something nice, or be polite or respectful to at least one person on this forum?? Make that your resolution.

I think they'll drop the weight down to 300g, make it 6mm thick, but actually reduce the specs to an A4, 256MB RAM and only make an 8GB model.

:D

what are the alternatives to an iPad. i bought a transformer infinity and it was way too buggy ;[

all the other tablets dont last as long

Google Nexus 10. It is arguably superior to the iPad. In fact, it may be the first tablet that is an all-around better device. The battery life is a little shorter, but otherwise has far better resolution, it is lighter, it has front-facing stereo speakers, it has GPS, it has 2 GB RAM, it costs $100 less, and makes a mean cup of hot chocolate.

It isn't an iPad, though, and I think there is something to be said for little things like nice accessories, a seamless experience with Mac apps, etc. I had the Transformer Prime and had issues with the wifi, amongst other things. The Infinity looks nice, but it is still back on ICS, right?

Anyhow, I'd say the iPad finally has some worthy competition. That's why I expect something from Apple in the spring, but without a processor or a strong likelihood of better screens, I guess the only place it could compete better would be weight. I wonder if that will be enough to shore up its eroding market share.

Anyone who has been to Japan knows that the Apple brand is strong there, and the iPad has typically been in extremely high demand, but the once mighty iPad has fallen to the Nexus 7 (http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-57564407-37/google-nexus-7-tops-ipad-in-japan-is-this-a-trend/). There are mitigating factors, like short supply of the Mini, but I think this is part of a broader trend of shifting to Android and its low-cost / strong specs. Time will tell. An iPad 5 in spring, though, would help Apple a lot.

I agree with above. I was more excited about the iPad 3 than any other device I have purchased.

Yep. It was just exactly what I wanted. I whine a bit about the 4 coming out so soon after it, but to be honest, I am still so pleased with the 3, I can't really work myself up into any kind of decent rage state. It may be the first Apple device ever (for me) that hit every point that I wanted it to hit. I remember watching the keynote and thinking this could not have been more perfectly designed :)

i really need a tablet badly but now that i have a macbook and apple tv, staying with their ecosystem would be beneficial despite me loving android and missing the awsome features it has. have no idea why everyone says iOS is so intuitive when widgets, notifications, menu, and google makes things way easier for the average person. but anyway ! I'm really hoping the 5 or at least the mini generation 2 comes out in march.

by the way i just downloaded a book on my macbook off itunes and it says i need an iOS device to view it...

I have the iPad 2 and am thinking that I might for the 5 if in fact they do release it then. I really would not mind the spec increase. I would love a design change, but I don't see much beyond the back looking like the mini. I will be saving my tax return money to see what happens. If it is not that great of an advancement then I will just get a discounted iPad 4.

There are a lot of things I love about Android, and many things I loathe in iOS, but in the end, I will say that it is nice how well the Apple stuff plays together. I have an Apple TV, and it has been a great purchase because of AirPlay (we cut the cord years ago, so no cable TV, etc.). Without my iPhone / iPad / MBA, it would be almost useless (Hulu, for example, often does not have the shows that are available on the Web version).

As for the iBooks thing, that sounds so very much like an Apple thing to do. Get used to being coerced into certain behaviors that are a "better" way of doing things. Why have 13 apps in a folder on the iPad when you could have just 12, for example :)

I would wait 4 weeks or so. If there is going to be March refresh the rumor mill will be full of vender leaks, part numbers, etc. I am assuming the 5 will be significantly lighter, but who knows.

I doubt there will be one this march. I think the only reason there was such a short time between the previous two launches were to set up Apple's product launches in the fall, to entice the Christmas shoppers.

My guess is it will have the same "power" of the iPad 4, but an updated design and technology such as NFC built in.

I doubt the capabilities of the iPad 4 are even being used at the moment by developers thus there is no need at the moment to improve the performance at this time, even further.

Either way I have switched to the mini now.

Why not release ipad 5 in march and discontinue ipad 2?

I think Ipad 3 with lightning connector would get a price decrease and ipad 5 will be released with stereo speakers and a redesign while ipad 2 would be discontinued. Just my prediction.

Given that Apple's history with iPad releases post-2 supports this theory, I'm inclined to agree.

Think you nailed it with the fact that the current ipad isn't even being pushed by the apps out there.

apple said they are going to increase security and help stop early leaks. i personally think a march release will help the company. a LOT of people i mean a lot are holding out for something to bring it up to speed with the stuff samsung and asus has been putting out spec wise. consumers are starting to care and notice that kind of stuff. apple wont get away with uneducated people that much longer actually.

they need a new thing to push that stock up a little bit. it doesnt have to be revolutionary it just has to be a comfortable lovable package. a retina display mini would of won everything but i will settle for a full size ipad with the weight of the original and as skinny as a mini.

Do you really think a iPhone or ipad upgrade is gonna be done in march?
I really doubt it
Is been mentioned before production for the new units start in march but that's not its release date
People also have to understand that one of the reasons the ipad 3 and 4 came 6 months apart is mainly because of the lightning connector
The iPhone 5, new ipad nanos and the ipad mini came out around the same time , so for them to leave the ipad without the lightning connector would be not be apple like since their really trying to push this technology out

Yet people would buy an ipad 5 even if it was a slimmed down version of the ipad 4 just because it looks better. Not sure how Apple are behind when compared to Samsung or Asus. For all the high tech of other tablets most of them still don't have the slickness of the Apple experience and those that do still struggle when it comes to app comparisons.

The way the cycle works, there's a market for a new one for sure, not because its needed in terms of evolution but because people will buy it just to have the latest variant. Apple always do the incremental updates and we all lap them up. I would still be surprised if they release anything in March. Having said all of this, I think more than just a cosmetic touch up would be the way to go - and if so, probably wouldn't happen until later in the year.
