Would Apple Care cover this? I haven't bought Apple Care for my new Powerbook so far, but if dropping the PB or damaging the display is covered then I'll definitely get it.
No. ClarkeB is either exaggerating or misinformed. If you drop or mishandle your PowerBook and damage it, that is not covered by AppleCare. Yet that does not mean that you cannot try.

Laptops are more failure-prone than desktops, but AppleCare does NOT cover damage you do to it, like drops.

And you can decide on AppleCare right up to the end of your year warranty. You don't have to decide right away.

Conventional wisdom is to get it for portables--but I didn't on mine and so far I'm not sorry :) Now just wait... it'll die tomorrow.

I guess it depends how mission-critical it is. You CAN do some repairs yourself, like diagnosing and replacing bad RAM, bad HD, etc.

Well, the value of Apple Care depends very much on how they handle it. If I have a HD head crash and they tell me that I was not intended to carry my Notebook around while it's powered on, then I can do without Apple Care ;-)

I would have been s.o.l. without my APP. I had a G3 ibook with the logic board issues. After a few times sending it in for repairs, I got a brand new G4 iBook. :D

I regretted getting it for my 12" Power book, but then one day, about 18 months after I bought it, it needed the DC board replaced. AppleCare paid for itself that day :)

I bought Applecare with the education discount when I bought my iMac G5. I think peace of mind on my hardware for 3 years is worth an extra $119. I have an extended warranty on my PC laptop too. I can't fix a laptop so it's a must.

Seems some are saying don't get AppleCare if you are selling your Mac or PowerBook after about a year. Well to me that is a reason to get AppleCare. AppleCare is a huge selling point for used Macs. I always want to know if the Mac has AppleCare coverage. Because the original included warranty is only offered to the original buyer and is not transferable. AppleCare is completely transferrable during the entire AppleCare term. Including AppleCare makes a Mac much more desirable to potential buyers, especially those new to Macs who want the telephone support more than the hardware warranty.

I sold my 1Ghz PowerBook G4 to a friend of mine, and he purchased AppleCare for it during the 1-Year Warranty. The warranty goes with the serial number/computer not the user, at least in practice.

I don't think it's worth purchasing, if you plan on selling the PowerBook within the original warranty. You will never get your $349 back from that purchase.

If you plan on selling within the 1st year, let the person you sell it to invest the $349 in AppleCare.

I don't know if any one else got a discount at the Apple Store but when I refused the AppleCare the sales guy said what if I sold it to you at $299.00. I bought it but felt like a sucker until the day I needed it.

This is where Dell is better. You can buy accident insurance from them.

I have Applecare for three machines, soon to be four. It's worth it to me. I've only had to use it once, but it pretty much covered the cost of Applecare in the first place. To me, if your going to spend that much money for the computer, you probably should have insurance.

Not a chance.

I was wondering if people with AppleCare could give me some info on experiences they have had. I will be getting my first Mac soon and wanted to know if its worth the money. ( I dont know if you need to know this but just incase... it will be for an iBook) - Thanks

Im in the same boat as you are..

Here is my reasoning for why I do plan on getting it...

As of right now I have an iPod and so does my sister. BOTH of ours went sour before the year was up (hell mine went sour after 2 months of getting it!) and when I went to the Apple store, they examined it, determined it was faulty and gave me a new one, same with my sister.

Im was pretty impressed by that alone.

I also plan on getting it because for me Ill be going to college in the fall and that laptop that I will get probably will indefinately be banged around quite a bit. I also heard the systems get REALLY REALLY HOT. Knowing me how I usually like to work on my bed with my laptops its going to overheat. I do plan on using it for throughout the 4 years at college so I think somewhere along the 3 years it is covered it may go sour and need to get repaired or more likely replaced because of overheating (did i mention I have gone through 2 laptops(PCs though) and they were so badly overheated I had to get it replaced?) So I have had a fair share of going to service centers and getting stuff serviced, and I must say it is definately worth it. Even though you have to fork over a few hundred, it beats forking over a few thousand if the thing just falls over and dies on you. In all of my computers frying on me its usually in the second year where I experience trouble.

However I must say my computer use is rather extensive. I usually never turn off my comptuers or laptops because Im either downloading, defragging, or simply because the next time I need to use it I dont feel like waiting for the damn thing to boot up :p Again though Im a PC user so I dont know how extensively I will be using my Apple when I get it.
