My son has a iPhone 3GS and he never uses the data, I'd like to get rid of the $30 data plan.

I've been unlocked with Tmobile for years now without a data plan but recently decided to add one for the hell of it. It is not impossible.

Jailbreak first, then unlock.

Are you sure he doesn't use data. Things other then the Internet use data. I just can't imagine a younger person owning a iPhone and not using data. My wife doesn't use much, but the use is still there.

The only way to avoid it is to go pre-paid, jb&unlock to use on t-mobile or use it as an ipod touch.
You can also get the 200MB plan for $15.

$15 for the 200MB plan is what I'd recommend. Data comes in handy not just for web browsing but also for GPS, e-mail, etc. If your kid wants directions to get back home, he won't be able to get them with no data connection (The GPS NEEDS a data connection to work).

If you jailbreak and get a pre-paid no data plan, this will work. Just make sure to change the settings to turn cellular data off.
