Just thinking about if, "heaven forbid", I need to take in for warranty
Or do most recycle?

I keep it for two reasons:

1. So I can move the iMac (moving house; taking it in for repair; etc.)

2. Because people pay more when you sell it in the original box. It clearly has little relation to the actual condition of the iMac itself, but it's one of those "nice to have" things that buyers go for.

Yes, definitely save the box. You'd be surprised how much you might need it & really, it doesn't take up that much room.

I made my mom swear never to throw hers out, she did of course. Then she had to borrow mine to take her iMac in to the Apple Store. So much easier to use a box than trying to tuck the thing under your arm. ---And a friend recently moved across country --he also didn't listen & threw out his box, thought he'd be okay because he hired a professional packer. iMac was damaged and wouldn't start when his stuff got to the new place.

KEEP the box!

Definitely keep it. So much easier to carry it to the Apple store, ship or sell with the original packing material. Better resale value as well I'd imagine.

I keep all my computer and peripheral boxes. Added bonus when I decide to sell them. Sometimes even get a slight bit more in value. As long as you have a place to store them. Why not?

Cut cardboard out around the screen and keep the computer in the box the whole time.

Thanks Guys

General consensus -Keep it
I will give it a go for 12 months and see what happens

I keep the box until I get rid of the computer. It helps bringing it in for warranty work. And if I sell the computer it means I have a box to ship it in.

I threw away the box from my 24" iMac and had to lug it to an Apple Store last year for repair and wished I had kept it. If it's a 27" I'd for sure keep the box, for the 21" it's debatable I suppose.

I buy my dad a new iMac every 3-4 years and get way more money when I have the box it also makes it impossible for them to be like hey man is it stolen? I also update my macbook every 2-3 years as well tho sadly the iMac doesn't retain it's value as much :D

Depends on the machine

Imac - yes, makes it much easier to transport safely later
Mac mini - no
Macbook air - no
iphone no
ipod no
ipad no
Real issue for me is the shape and the difficulty of packing it safely later

I love Apple boxes so definately a YES for me! Especially with the iMac, I think it's important to keep it for transport etc... when you need to. Unless you have a better way to protect it.

Whenever I head in to the Apple store, it's amazing to see how many people are bringing their iMacs back in the box. Smart thing.

I'll keep mine. The box for this MBP is sitting next to my desk. You just never know.

Getting the outer box

I plan to purchase my iMac when I travel to the states later this year. Does anyone know if its easy to get one of the outer brown card board boxes at the store?

iMacs are shipped by Apple in their "fancy" boxes, they do not put them into another box. There is no brown outer box for them.

Things may have changed but when I got my iMac that was purchased from Apple online (3 yrs ago) it came with an outer brown box that was just big enough to hold the white iMac box inside. I even remember that it was hard getting the white box out even with its handle as it was almost air tight in there between the two boxes.

Or it may vary as to when they actually use the outer brown boxes. In any case, an Apple Store won't stock them. The only time I ever received a Mac in a brown outer box was a laptop.

I always keep most of my apple boxes . but i upgrade frequently and it makes selling and shipping so much easier. I couldn't imagine shipping an iMac without the box.
