I plan to purchase my iMac when I travel to the states later this year. Does anyone know if its easy to get one of the outer brown card board boxes at the store?

No longer brown boxes on new iMacs. You could easily go to Uhaul or any of the moving companies and get a slightly bigger box. Then just fill the extra area inside with foam peanuts. Would be more secure.

The brown box Apple use to supply would not do much for added security. It fit so tight to the white box that it only made it a slightly stronger box.

Keep the box and inserts

Yes, I kept the box AND inserts.
They will serve you well if you move.
I also kept the styrofoam inserts (keep them if you keep the box.)
The glass screen cover and screen are expensive replacements and the box and inserts will protect your computer (at least the iMac) in the event of a move or a trip, e.g., to the Apple Store or across country.
The big iMac is heavy and hard to carry if you don't have help. FLUFFY

Are you saying they don't even provide the brown outer box when it is shipped to your door?

My new iMac was BTO and was shipped to Apple Store. No brown box, only box it came in was the white one. I was quite surprised as all the iMac's I ever bought previously came in both boxes.

Just thinking about if, "heaven forbid", I need to take in for warranty
Or do most recycle?

I keep the box, because you never know if your iMac will need to be transported back to Apple for repair.

If you move house, you will be able to pack and transport your iMac safely.

And lastly, if you sell on your iMac on eBay for example, you have all the packaging to send it to the purchaser.
