I have about 64 items on my desktop at any given time. I've tried to keep clean, but they just keep coming back. And smart folders just aren't instantaneous enough for me.

I have a 'Desktop Stuff™' folder on my desktop where everything that would normally get dumped on the desktop goes.

Best way, that gets cleaned out now and again as well.

I use my Desktop as a workspace for whatever project(s) I'm currently working on. Then whenever I'm done with a project (or task) I clean up the leftovers (some go in trash some into appropriate folders in ~/Jobb/).

I also have a folder in ~/Documents/ called "must be tidied" (or really the Norwegian equivalence) where I put all the sh...tuff I don't know what to do with. This folder gets sorted/cleaned every now and then...

>Screenshots (I occasionally need to take a lot of screenshots for certain projects, and I clean up my desktop and put them in here. The problem is, I get so many pictures labeled "Picture 1" that I often have to rename them, and it becomes a pain.)
Send all screen shots directly to the assigned folder... :)

In Terminal, type:

defaults write com.apple.screencapture location /Full/Path/To/Folder

Substitute the /Full/Path/To/Folder with the actual path, note that the ~ to represent the home folder will not work). Make sure the destination folder exists, then relaunch Finder (log out and back in/restart) and all screen shots should go there. I use it.

I have my Macbook icon, external HD icon, an alias to my uni work in my documents folder. That's it. Whatever is downloaded is put onto my desktop, but I've just created a downloaded stuff in Documents to stop that :)

I have nice big icons so I can't have too many files on my desktop.

Hi, do you like keeping your desktop tidy I personally do I hate having stuff on my desktop the only thing on my desktop is my hard drive. So what do you do with your desktop. (post picture if you want)

It's amazing how terminology changes over time - when I read that I looked at my 'physical' desktop and thought what a mess! I read further and then realised that you were referring to the Mac desktop - which in my case is quite tidy.

Do I like keeping it tidy? Yes. Does it always stay that way? Unfortunately, no. I'm a messy person at heart, who tries to hide it as best he can.

Me too! My Mac desktop has 2 icons - internal and external HD. My External HD has absolutely no organization at all... I just move everything from my desktop there.

I like to keep both desktops tidy (or all 3 with XP  4 with PowerBook). I've got a random selection of pens, plectrums and memory cards infront of me right now. god knows how they got there.
Like to keep tidy but files n junk just seem to secretly pile up.

I'm definitely a tidy desktop guy. I keep my HD and any other mounted disks/drives on there, and occasionally a rouge file for a short time if it needs attention. Otherwise, I like to look at whatever picture I've currently chosen as my background.

I always keep two items on my desktop, with the occasional flash drive mounted for whatever project Im doing for school. My first hard drive is named whatever the code name for the unit is (In the case of my G4, Mystic) and the secondary HD, my backup, is labeled "Vault".

I've already had a MR member copy my system. Makes me feel special. :D

I dont mind the icons all over my XP desktop. I find it convenient without a dock.

Whenever something downloads on my G4, it goes to the desktop, and I like it that way. Makes it so I don't forget and DL it again. I just hate the .DMG with the disk image, with the unzipped folder, yadda yadda yadda JUST GIVE ME THE FILE! I dont need 3 icons cluttering up my space.

*breathes* end of my mini rant.

Sometimes downloads save to my desktop, I have a huge folder called "Files". Two actually. One on one hard drive, one on the other. Both over 2GB in size. Why look at disorganization when you can hide it?

The ONLY thing on my desktop is the Macintosh HD icon and the Dock. It will get cluttered when I'm working on a project, and that's ok so long as I'm using my desktop for actual work, but I can't stand to have stuff just pile up...

For a while, I had a "Temp" folder on the desktop, and I've tried keeping one in the dock, but my newest one is a desktop folder on my wallpaper of wallpaper (which I found in the desktop threads) in which I made an icon look like a light switch. :D The folder's called " " so it has no name...

So yes, I loathe desktop clutter. I also find it useful for work in progress, so if I'm doing a bit of photo fiddling for an hour or so, there will be a file or two on the desktop, and so having no others makes it easy to find them.

When I'm in the middle of writing a paper, my desktop is full of journal articles and such... like right now. I am working on 3. It's a sad sight indeed.
