Since my car is in a garage attached to my house and the garage and side door are secure, I leave it unlocked.

I never leave the car unlocked. I have this habit of locking it as soon as I walk away from it. And wouldn't you think they could make technology so that you couldn't start the car without the key even if you pulled the ignition and tried to hot-wire it?

My car is always locked. It doesn't take any effort, so I see no reason not to. Plus, it locks itself after a minute or so anyway.

Out of force of habit, I lock my vehicle at all times.

I finally have a working detached garage (I bought a house in Sept and I had to get electricity run back to it bc at some point someone had pulled it off the grid, and then rafters had to be moved because there wasn't enough vertical space for the track for the opener).

I have been trying to remember to unlock all the car doors so that when I go in, in the morning, I don't have to juggle stuff I'm trying to get into the car and my keys.

OTOH, I do worry that then, I'll forget to lock it when it's parked outside somewhere.

 It doesn't cost anything, the effort is negligible, and if someone tries to break into your car in the garage (where the thief is hidden from sight and has all the time in the world) your car alarm will go off and let you know it's time to call the cops or grab a gun (or both).

I don't see why a person wouldn't.

Because there's no point. The garage is locked. Why lock the car, unless you share the garage with tenants of an apartment building. In a single family home, it's completely unnecessary.

Of course, all it takes is a little push of a button on the key to lock/unlock.

1) cross match all you guys who claim to leave your cars unlocked with the "pictures of your car" thread
2) do you really need me to explain step 2?
3) there is no step 3
4) Profit!

Depends if I'm outside or home during the day garage is left open and car unlocked.
Nighttime- car& garage are locked.its detached too so I don't need nifty ppl pokin around my garge when I'm sleeping lol

When I rented a duplex with a open layout two stall garage, yes.

When I rented an apartment with a private garage with no windows and only the apartment access door, no.

My question is, why wouldn't you lock your car in the garage? For nearly everyone it's a simply push of a button on the remote as you walk away. It's free protection and you're walking away from it.

But people don't. Even my wife doesn't lock her car in the garage. Makes no sense to me.

It is easier to replace a $30 FM radio transmitter than a $150 window.

Ah, but there's one reason locking my car inside my garage does not work for me. Occasionally, but often enough for it to make a difference to me, I need to get something out of the car, or put something in the car that I want to take somewhere later. Since my car is not locked, I don't have to go get the key as well.

Yep. If I'm not in it, it's locked. Heck, when I'm in it it's locked!

Thought about this, don't get it. Yeah, if the car is locked, one way to get in is to smash a window. But if the "FM radio transmitter" (that's the button to unlock the car, right) is laying there, it won't get stolen, the car will.

Yes. If I'm not in my car, it is locked.

I just moved to a new apartment where my garage is detached and across from my apartment and while I can see it from my bedroom window, I still press my "LOCK" button twice before I go to sleep to make sure it is locked.

I got into the habit of locking my car in the garage when I took a trip for two weeks, and the battery died while I was gone. It was a 1999 VW, and research revealed that when the car was not locked, the computer would actively search for the key fob lock button to be pressed, and that drained the battery. Maybe they changed it by now, but I thought that was an odd quirk. VW electronics are pretty crazy.

I was referring to one of those devices you plug into your iPhone or iPod and it broadcasts whats playing to a radio station. That is the most expensive thing in my car.
