Do you need antivirus program?

I'm used to using pcs and I'm about to get a MacBook. If I do want to Download an antivirus program what would you recommend? What else can I do from preventing getting viruses? Thanks

My work MacBook Pro has McAfee installed but mostly to protect the PC's from passing along any viruses to them.
