My question is this: Do you need a mobile me subscription to have an apple email address? I dont want to pay for mobileme if i dont need it. The ONLY thing i would use it for is to have an apple email.

Even if you decide to take the plunge, @mac.com addresses are no longer offered. Instead, you get only @me.com address, which doesn't scream Apple at all tbh.
