IDo you own one?

1. Has your drive failed?

2. Does it make loud clicking noises?

3.Do you get long pauses and the beach ball every once in a while or when loading an application?

4. Do you get errors when transferring data?

Yes, so

1: Not in the week and a half I've owned my iMac (the 27th will be week 2)
2: Nope, not even once
3: Nope
4: Nope

Clicking and Loading issues

I get the constant access clicking noises that have been reported by others, and since I am using my iMac in my home Recording Studio, it IS very obtrustive

I also have started getting "slow disk" warnings, while recording, this stops the recording process, and is  driving me up the wall . I bought this unit due to its 64 Bit structure, maximizing processing, and speed, so as to optimize the recording process... I find I have to increase the I/O Buffer Size from 64 to 128 samples, which increase latency by 25% I may be nit picking, but this was why I bought the i7, and as the interuptions are intolerable.

I've visited other sites, and the solution has been to get a second drive; I'm not even sure if there is room for a second internal drive, or if an external is a valid solution

I haven't complained to :apple: yet, but they will be hearing from me, as I have only had this system since March, and I'm just starting to see the "slow disk" problem, I have been tolerating the constant access clicking noises up to now!

My Seagate disk is quiet and fast, but I only had this iMac for a few days so that might change I guess.

mine after 2 months just gave me...S.M.A.R.T. Status-FAILING!!!
basically i need a new HD...fricken sucks

I've had 3 iMacs so far (27" i7). Can't remember what the first hd was but it did make a grumbling noise. So did the second one, and that was Hitachi. I now have a Seagate and it is noticeably quieter. Every now and again, it might make a very slight grumbling but it is much much quieter than the previous two. The other two were obviously grumbling and you could hear it across the room if it's relatively quiet.

However, I am getting a 4th so who knows what drive is going to be inside that one... I think I've resigned myself to the fact that they all pretty much grumble but the Seagate is the quietest "grumbler". So if the next one is not a Seagate... well, not much I can do and I think I'll just take it as long as there are NO dead pixels. This was the main reason I returned the others (along with varying yellow tinting).

I want to know from people's experience who own an iMac with a Seagate drive?
I hate Seagate as a hard drive manufacturer and with my luck I received my iMac i7 today with a Seagate ST31000528ASQ Drive.

I have read horrible reviews about loud clicking noises and people's hard drive failing.

My 2TB is Hitatchi:
Hitachi HDS722020ALA330:

Capacity: 2 TB (2,000,398,934,016 bytes)
Model: Hitachi HDS722020ALA330
However, at times it does make clicking noises. Loud is relative, not LOUD (how many db is caps?), but above the ambient noise db level, enough to hear it.

I have an i7 and I can here is searching and when it's doing stuff but most of the time it's quiet. Thats normal though huh?

My first iMac and second Mac since 1992. I'm used to knowing what's in my PC's so when I googled the part #, this thread came up.

I've had it for 2 days and so far, I am super happy. As far as the hard drive is concerned, mine's a 1TB and even though I am used to having an SSD boot up my ThinkPad in seconds, this hard drive is also super fast! At first, I couldn't even tell where in the machine the hard drive was even located because it is that quiet! It has seen a lot of action so far, too. In consolidating my various lower-capacity drives that I use for storage, I've transferred a total of 800GB(!) onto the drive via Ethernet and WiFi. I can only hear the drive in the middle of the night but then again, I'd be able to hear a pin drop, too. There has not been a single problem with the drive.

Having said that, I also wish I could install one of my SSD's into my new iMac, and hook up the 1TB drive externally via USB. Luckily, OS X is unbelievably fast, but that only means that it could be even faster! One person suggested that I should try the Apple Store where I bought it, and that they may be able to help me. I'm not so sure about that because of the potential warranty issues, but I guess I can give it a try.

I am posting this from my i5 with this drive and I am not sure which is louder, my typing or the hard drive LOL.. It is somewhat annoying but I am getting used to it. My wife asked what was making all that noise the other day... I may call apple

I have a 24" 3.06 gjz imac and i have this hard drive. its loud when i do things that are intensive like game but other than that its quiet. it only happens after i exit a game of counter strike: source and i think its normal. my friend has a western digital and drive in her imac and hers makes no noise. its anoyying but i dont care

It seems like you do care or you wouldn't have revived a dead thread to post about it. :p

Incidentally, about to enter month 10 with the Seagate drive here in my i7 and still no abnormal noise to speak of, in Steam games or otherwise.

In my opinion the poll does not include the relevant answers, as the only 3 choices are:

1.) Constant humming when powered on (can be removed partially by putting something between the desk and the iMac

2.) Activity noise (stomach growling)

3.) a perfectly silent harddrive (this is only a rumor)

I would click on 2.) ;-)

I have a wdc on my brand new one and it has a light hum and clicking is wdc worse than seagates?

My first three iMac's (in about six weeks) had problems, the first two of which had the Seagate ST31000528ASQ, and the 3rd one had the ST31000528AS (notice the missing "Q"). Nothing was wrong with any of the hard drives, I'm just saying. By the way, the one without the "Q" was loud and obnoxious, so maybe the "Q" stands for Quiet? lol...

My 4th iMac (the i7) is finally one that's PERFECT. I love it! Pound on wood! It has a nice and quiet Western Digital! WD1001FALS-40Y6A0, to be exact, which is receiving excellent reviews across the board everywhere I've looked so far (newegg, buydotcom, etc.) :D

Same here, I've a Seagate ST31000528AS on my new iMac and it's really loud

Interesting theory, and I must say that my own, silent Seagate does indeed have the "Q" at the end.

That said, I'm sure someone with a ST31000528ASQ drive will be more than happy to claim excessive HD noise in here. It seems rather random.

Can someone post a recording of what their problematic drive sounds like?

I can hear my drive access, typical sound any computer makes. Is there really a questionable sound or do people expect an iMac to be quiet?

I bought a 27" iMac today. The hard drive is ST31000528AS and it's very loud. Also the iMac has the same high frequency noise when you turn down the brightness that I've read from several places. Should I take it to be replaced, or will I simply get the same problems again? If all else fails, I might simply ask to get a 21,5" model instead if it doesn't have these problems.
