Many of you are making valid criticisms of Apple and the X release. Apparently, this was actually meant to see release in 2018. I think Apple knew they had to get something out earlier, so kudos to them for recognizing the need to get it to market, as the landscape has certainly changed. It explains why there are iPhone 8 models as well. Those would’ve been their “flagship” smartphones for 2017 had Apple stuck with their original plan.
I don’t know how anyone can look at this and not say the competition these past couple of years has not only stepped up, but surpassed them in a slew of hardware and software categories — a point some of us have been making for years now. A point many of us had to inevitably argue for to certain Apple “fans.”
Now there is no need.
The iPhone X is a superior iOS experience over the previous generations. And when the price of entry comes down, even more will know. Until then, this is Apple catching up in all its glory and clumsiness.

Apple would have been in a really bad place if they didn't release the X this year. Four generations of the same phone is a little ridiculous.

Staying put..with Android.
Dasher app is superior on it. After I canceled my silver X Best Buy order three hours ago, I made a mistake with DoorDash by going to the wrong Baskin-Robbins. I couldn't find the chat support on the Dasher app for iOS to cancel the order. I looked everywhere. Android has it kinda hidden too but it's there.
Tethering is also much harder and picky with iOS. I have to keep turning it back on and off between data and personal hotspot. After awhile, my other phones will lose connection to it. Android's hotspot capability is so much easier. So I swapped sims from my SE back to the G5. The SE will still be used as a backup.
I guess canceling the iPhone X order became a huge relief then! That was going to be my daily driver but tethering and Dasher app is more troublesome for me. I wasn't saying this two weeks ago, but I might heavily consider the Essential PH-1. It's like 2.5 mm shorter and only 1 mm wider than the X.
Just waiting for another price drop. Get it by $300. Dasher app and tethering is the two most critical things I need on a phone and Android is superior to iOS in both.

Stuff like this is said a lot but it’s not true. They’ll still make buckets of money and had the opportunity to turn the market over again with the new form factor, better planned and with two versions. I think rushing this to market might do more harm than good. We’ll see. The Apple fanbase is pretty loyal. I went shopping with my X this morning and a guy behind the deli counter noticed what I was texting on. His eyes lit up like I’d just pulled the briefcase from Pulp Fiction out. He asked me “WOW is that IT?”
So yeah, even with just a 7S release this year they would have been fine.

It doesn't take much to get a cashier to be amazed. I paid for my McDonald's coffee with my Gear S3 watch last week and the cashier looked like he had just met Elvis and called over all his coworkers. I just wanted my coffee.
Right. Which is why another “S” year would have been fine while Apple finished it’s new hardware and software tweaks for release next fall.

You're definitely not wrong. Apple has the fanbase and bank to outlast anyone. But the perception would have changed ever more slightly, I think, if it was only an iPhone 8 this year. Don't think it would've hurt their sales too much though.
I'm curious to see how it plays out. I noticed there was zero line at my local Apple store today. Very weird for a new release.

Based on early returns from iPhone 8 (being outsold by iPhone 7), there is potentially a fatigue with the iPhone 6 form factor. While part of it may be iPhone X, the reality is without iPhone X people on the 6S would probably be less likely to want to upgrade than ever.
Of course Apple will continue to sell devices; they were a niche company for most of their history, but history is full of companies that rested on their laurels when they should have focused on innovation.

There was zero line at my local Apple store Saturday and Sunday too, but it was because they were completely sold out of the X. Store was still packed though.

I think the general public know and are wowed by iPhone's even if it deserves it or not. the x has been marketed very well as always so it's on everybody's mind which is why there isn't another phone out there that would get such attention and a big reason why sales will be so good.
for non tech people they will always get iPhones
I personally really am enjoying my x and it's got the features I have loved on android for years. Next year will be the bigger screen which people again will jump to upgrade to.
I checked availability online and my local stores did have same day pick up available. But that doesn't really tell me anything. I'm sure the X sold like crazy.

I have never seen such a large marketing campaign for a product. The Apple hype machine has been in overdrive for the X. They really do need this thing to sell well.

I find that the thickish side borders disappear very quickly in every day use. I think the side borders on the pixel Xl are much more noticeable for some reason, maybe because of the top/bottom bezels and how uneven the entire front of it looks.
I've grown to accept the notch. Not because I'm used to it, no I'll never get used to it. But mainly because I appreciate the pluses it brings with it. 1) It saves screen space because we have the status bar up there and 2) I take it as a trade off to not having a bottom bezel at all, something not even Samsung can claim.
Kinda. You have a bottom bezel whenever the keyboard is on screen because they have to raise it to make it usable. Thus there's lots of wasted space.

What I am curious about is that since Apple is launching X and X Plus next year, will they continue to offer the older design at the usual price point with spec bumps while the X Plus occupies the $1100 slot with X at $999? If thats the case, the usual $699 price point will never see a new design for years now? I think customers will really start looking at Android as a good option in that scneario

I have been thinking the same thing. I’m surprised how little the X has been advertised since Friday. I’ve seen 2 adverts and had an email from Carphone Warehouse.
I did laugh though as about 20 people camped overnight outside the Apple Store in Cardiff to get it on the 3rd but they still had stock at midday lol. It didn’t sell out like was being suggested. I doubt it’ll be as big in the UK as elsewhere though as Brexit has really put a dampener on Apples sales here.

I think Apple will lower the price a bit and eliminate home button iPhones. X at $899 and X Plus at $999.

Which customers? Customers who opt for high-end phones or those seeking a more budget minded phone. Which country are you referring to? Judging from the iPhone X response I don’t think there will be a mass exodus. A few people on online forums....sure.
Yeah hopefully that's the case otherwise I find it aggravating to the usual customers who aren't in it for a super premium phone. The same dated model for 700 bucks year after year....

It is dated but like other have said, the 8 is the most polished best looking version. The gold iPhone 8 Plus IMO is a beauty. The camera has gotten a big upgrade as well.

Yeah absolutely, that's another peeve of mine, the wasted space under the keyboard. Although if you compare that to let's say the Note 8 or S8, then you'll see it's not so much "wasted" space as you think when you factor in that 2/3 of it could have been hardware bezel like on the Samsungs. Of course it depends on the application, something full screen like a movie uses that space.
