Hey all!

I'm just curious how many of you use star ratings. I'm considering starting because of some cool Smart Playlist ideas I've seen on Reddit, but I wonder if it's a lost cause at this stage in the game.

If so, how do you use the star ratings in organizing your library?

Thanks :)

I've voted No, but I've done it occasionally. Typically that's when it's a new album and I end up liking a particular song right off the bat and want to remember which one it was :)

I went through my entire iTunes library at one point and rated every song, and since then I’ve rated new songs as I add them. Star ratings are mission critical for me. I only listen to smart playlists based on my ratings (edit- and other filters).

Both for me. I'll typically add 30+ songs a week to my library, so being judicious with ratings and playlists is a must, or else the music just disappears into a black hole.

5-star music and maybe 70% of the 4-star stuff gets a heart, and then I put together a playlist each quarter of just those songs. Then each year those are combined for a (very long) year in review playlist.

I essentially use a 3-star system these days, because back when I started with ripped CDs, I used 1 and 2-star ratings to denote songs that I didn't want to hear at all vs songs that I'd listen to if I were listening to the entire CD, but never any other time. 3-stars are for music that's OK but forgettable; and then 4 and 5-star stuff is for music that I don't want to forget.

These days with Apple Music, I rarely add full albums, so everything is really 3-stars and above.

The rating system I rely on to manage my library. 5 star songs are the only ones that make it on my iPhone. I only keep 4 and 5 star songs in my library. If I want to keep an entire album in the library, then I'll rate 3 stars and above. 1 and 2 star songs get automatically deleted.

I don't subscribe to Apple Music, so this is vital to me. I prefer to own an album instead of paying a monthly subscription. I'll use Spotify to listen to something and if I like it, buy it on iTunes.
